Another Sinn Féin councillor resigns from party
The BBC reports that Moyle District Councillor Padraig McShane has resigned from Sinn Féin. From the report
In a statement on Friday, he said he was leaving Sinn Fein. But he remained tight lipped about the reason why.
He said that his decision followed “certain allegations” which might be taken up by “certain hostile media elements”.
“My adjudication on this matter leads me to believe that those hostile elements within the media would use any allegation to attack my party and the job of work it has undertaken,” he said.
It is understood he will remain as a councillor representing the Glens District in Moyle Council.

weirder and weirder and more curious by the minute is this old land of ours.
Fight in a bar in Larne.
Fight in a bar in Larne.
If ever six words summed up our entire political system…
yup, it much the same as anywhere else, could have been a fight in a bar in Vegas, Rome, Cairnes, Rio, whatever.
Has this man been arrested, are there charges? It is all very odd. All politicians should know better than to get involved in a fight anywhere, but John Prescott got away with throwing a punch…
Peter Baker.
You seem to have an obsessive preoccupation with Sinn Fein.
Your day wouldn’t be complete if you didn’t have some muck to sling.
Could you not find some we spot on an asteroid where you could chill out?
At least untill you get over the shock of the election’s.
jtwo,
For someone that waxes lyrical on standards of reporting on this blog I’m surprised you drop annonymous allegations like that. Regardless of if they are true or not it must be noted they have absolutely no value as the source has no credibility.
McShane is said to be a very pleasant man.
Pete – you may remember blogging on how he helped out in Dunclug, Ballymena, recently as a community activist during the disturbances there.
Paudie, a man of few syllables. He’d recently described a project he was working on that involved an unnamed developer.
Has he not heard of the Super Injunction or is that for the exclusive use of DUPers?
Does anyone know if these Injunctions last for ever? I am very old and I don’t want to die wondering.
Wonder did he kick thon chair in Irish, English or the Hamley tongue.
My God….ANOTHER SF councillor resigns from Party. How many is that now? 500? 1000?
My God there must be nobody left in SF.
Deep philosophical agreement? Er no…..pub fight.
Nobody will vote for them now.
18 lost deposits.
Well probably not. But Mr Baker must take comfort where he can.
It does hapen quite a bit to be fair
They usually seem to resign then be reincarnated in another Cummann as Treasurer – isn’t that how it works?
How many in numbers?
How many in proportion?
To be fair….they have more councillors than most.
Off the top of my head (there may be more)
Dessie Ward
Padraig McShane
Briege Meehan
Domhnall O’Cobhthaigh
Gerry McHugh
Bernice Swift
Barry Monteith
Gerard Foley
Killian Ford
Christy Burke
John Dwyer
Louise Minihan
Thomas Pringle
It is getting very close to 10% of their councillors across Ireland.
Was there witnesses to this fight or were they all in the toilet?
If they’re gonna resign everytime “hostile media elements” ( a change from securocrats ‘spose)MAY write about them, they’ll soon be all resigning.
Michael Tallon
Having read his comments and the article you posted from the Ballymoney Times you could be right…
Damage limitation before the election perhaps…Allegedly of course.
I’d say Briege Meehan was more a case of walking the plank Mark.
Still, the retention rate is worse than McDonalds’
A fear of Dissident Journalist attack before the elections is a strong possibity.
It looks like the pen really is mightier than the sword, or in this case the semtex.
Reasons for leaving:
Dessie Ward – SF too left wing
Padraig McShane – Not known but no dispute with the party
Breige Meehan – expelled
Domhnall O’Cobhthaigh – SF too right wing
Gerry McHugh – SF would not employ his ex-girlfriend
Bernice Swift – Personalities
Barry Montieth – policing
Gerard Foley – policing
Killian Forde – SF too left wing
Christy Burke – local issues
John Dwyer – Personal fall outs
Louise Minihan – not clear
Thomas Pringle – an independant who joined but then preferred to be independant
Michael Tallon – not clear
Any other party and that number leaving in such a short time would be flagged as massive internal implosion. It must surely indicate a wider problem with less public members also.
Well you could put somebody’s eye out with a pen…Try writing with a sword.
‘Still, the retention rate is worse than McDonalds’’
so Mary Lou is included in this?
does anyone know the state of play re the entire alleged, alleged, briege meehan brouhaha?
All the major parties in Ireland have lost councillors, Fianna Fail are about to lose many more. But probably no other political party gets the running commentary and interest than when someone decides to leave Sinn Fein. But there you go.
over how long?
You appear to have forgotten people from the Civil War.
13 left would of course be more than are ever going to get elected as dissidents, wouldnt it?
Before creating some of his own disturbances in Larne.
are we going to call them DISSIDENT JOURNALISTS now, we all know who they are by now.
[...] come across.Sinn Féin’s hidden crisis?Mark McGregor,Fri 30 April 2010, 8:46pm0In the comments on Pete’s entry covering Padraig McShane’s resignation from Sinn Fein I noted the following list of SF Councillors that have recently resigned:Dessie Ward Padraig [...]
Rumours are circulating that a certain DUP newcomer and UUP renegade has left the marital home
Well it was Marty who coined the phrase in the first place…
cut the bull
The same one who has been injuncting (as yet unreported in the mainstream amedia) like a mofo over the last two months over allegations that might interest, shall we say, top shelf magazine readers ??
ctb, seosamh
If you want to walk a site into actionable territory can you do it on your own not Mick’s.
I like the phrase, I just detest the DISSIDENT JOURNALISTS who make up war stories, who schooled them.
I am not sure PIRA or any other republican group have ever used a sword, a knife or any other close contact weapon, unless the victim was tied down of course. Sniper fire and semtex, those are the weapons of choice, keeps the murderer at a nice safe distance from the act…
If journalists are, at last, exposing the sins of some, that can only be a good thing. It is after all why they are there.
This resignation is ALLEGEDLY to do with something you’d think only the DUP would be involved in. Nothing to do with a fight in a bar (tho I did believe that when I read it this afternoon given who we’re talking about).
when I say something only the DUP would be involved in, I don’t mean anything top shelf. Just to be clear.
Interestingly, I’ve yet to hear the ritual statement from Sinn Féin calling for him to return the seat to Sinn Féin.
‘Cause, you know, it’s a Sinn Féin seat.
Man on man massage???
Photos from Nudist colony??
Bible readings for pipe bombers??
Bobbing up and down as he speaks??
How funny.
I hope its in the Sunday papers.
surely not the ‘bobbing up and down’.
Are they bombing pipes now? This anti smoking crusade has gone too far and a man should be able to have a smoke in his own nudist colony if he so wishes without photos being taken.
Very good.
LOL
It may be that in this sanitised world of ours the nudist colony was the only place he was allowed to smoke.
Personally I keep my smoking for my lounge. It might be a good idea if he did too.
Mark McGregor
I know better than to land the site in the muck legally. It would be interesting to have clarified the rules/laws around reporting/discussing injunctions in place without any reference to what is being injuncted about, or mentioning names obviously etc.
