No pope here, nor in Wales

Wed 17 March 2010, 4:29pm

Details have been announced of Emperor Constantine Pope Benedict XVI’s official state visit to the UK Scotland and England. Apparently, it’s got something to do with the way his Empire is administrated… According to the BBC report – “The theme of the visit will be relations between the Christian Churches and the major faiths.” But, obviously, not those who “cannot, according to Catholic doctrine, be called ‘Churches’ in the proper sense.” And, according to Scottish Secretary of State, Jim Murphy, MP, “It is the first ever official Papal visit to our country combining state-to-state discussions and related engagements as well as pastoral events being organised by the Catholic bishops’ conferences of England, Wales and Scotland”.

Your habitual use of the strikethrough, your sarcastic comments, links to your own posts, your obvious agenda and unhealthy fixation with Gerry Adams bring your contributions to Slugger up to the level of drivel.

It is all the more disconcerting, USA, when he strikes through “the UK” and substitutes “Scotland and England” since the United Kingdom (UK) is essentially the state that comprises the kingdoms of Scotland and England. Wales is a principality within and of the kingdom of England in this regard.

Therefore when the Pope vists both Scotland and England he will be visiting both kingdoms within the United Kingdom.

…and what about Northern Ireland, I hear you ask?

Well… that is a tricky one. Northern Ireland is not actually included in the designation *United Kingdom” but is merely a late appendage to this “United Kingdom” as in the designation “the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland”.

This refers to the united kingdoms of England (wherein is included Wales) and Scotland, which together comprise “Great Britain” and then “Northern Ireland” is added on as a sort of afterthought (at least since 1921) which wasn’t expected to last and was one reason why everyone in London simply ignored its existence more or less for the first fifty years and rather wish they could ignore it now.

As for the Pope. He’s not daft. He’s keeping well out of it.

Rory carr. Thank you for this. However, as a Republican with impeccable credentials (classed by others; I no longer subscribe to Tone etcc), should I call Great Britain the UK? I always refer to Britain. Old schoolish

Sectarian kick the Pope stuff does not further community relations, except those with agendas. England has more RCs than Ireland so it is entirely proper he should visit England. he cannot viist everywhere. He is not the Queen or mary McAleese.

    Thanks USA,

Always nice to hear from a fan.

At least Rory shows evidence of having actually read the post…

    You are welcome Peter.

Personally I don’t care about the pronouncements of the Pope or where he visits. In the interest of fairness I should probably also state that the same goes for the queen of England.

Most presumptuous of you, USA to speak for the Queen.

Surely she should be left to tell us herself whether or not she “care[s] about the pronouncements of the Pope or where he visits”.

Oh dear – wrong, wrong, wrong.

Northern Ireland is included in the designation United Kingdom. A big hint is in the fact that everything after the “of” explains of what and where the United Kingdom exists.

Take a look at the Northern Ireland Act, the Belfast Agreement or every single definition of the United Kingdom that you are to look up, if you don’t want to take my word for it.

Oh and prior to the 1920s, it was the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland so your “afterthought that wasn’t supposed to last” point is a little silly too.

The Pope is the leader of the worlds largest padophile ring, he should be arrested and charged, with harboring these sickos, hiding behind their plastic idols rosaries, fake idols, putting fear into the minds of the young, and of course those with little or no learning of the outside world. It is a medieval practice and should have died away with the reformation.
