Gregory Campbell: Peter has a week to clear his name…

Sat 9 January 2010, 4:51am

ACCORDING to Gregory Campbell on Stephen Nolan’s Radio 5 Live show, Peter Robinson has a week to clear his name. Campbell, who didn’t actually attend tonight’s meeting of DUP officers, refused to give his unequivocal backing to Robinson, adding that the DUP leader’s neck was on the line.

Meanwhile, names are being mentioned about who might take over if Robinson resigns. Deputy Dodds appears uninterested, which leaves figures like Arlene Foster and Sammy Wilson in the frame, although whether an ex-UUPer or a politician so lacking in gravitas would be given the post is another question. This may also be something other parties like Sinn Fein, as well as the two governments, are considering – is Robbo still the least worst option for political progress? Mick doesn’t buy it, but there was a ‘Save Dave’ campaign for Trimble before his position became completely untenable. Could we end up with Keep Pete? And what happens if Robinson stays beyond next week, but public opinion remains hostile in the run-up to the general election? How fast can a man move in a grey suit?

Despite the BBC’s headline, the actual quotes suggest less of a ‘deadline’ and more room to manoeuvre

The East Londonderry MP said: “I think Peter Robinson has the confidence of his party – that is the position and has been the position.

“But he himself has said that he wants to put his own credibility on the line in the manner in which he has done by setting up this investigation which in some respects is a very brave thing to do.”

He added: “Peter himself has asked for a week to resolve those issues, respond to them and refute them.

“I think we should allow him that week and hopefully we then move on in a week’s time.”

The party will, if it has any sense, shut up now for a week before judgment is passed. But this probe really needs to be open and transparent – if Robbo is cleared, it’s not just the DUP who need to know how and why.

After panorama on Monday, the end is nigh. there is no logical successor to Robinson; not least as the DUP was essentially Pailey’s party, and Robinson was able to carry the party and the electorate as paisley’s right hand man.

When Robinson does go, there is nobody left who will be politically capable of cutting the deal with Sinn Fein.

Onwards to the election, and there are certain to be defections to TUV (both amongst the electorate and DUP Members). This will be to Sinn Fein’s gain. In the longer term Unionism will have to realign in the centre ground.

Gregory Campbell’s views do not surprise me. He has never been happy with the deal Paisley did with SF. He would be one of the so called “12 angry men” and I think he would have been happier in the TUV.

I am sorry to say but i think Peter Robinson has been holed below the waterline. It is probably the worst time in our Peace Process that this could have happened and i fear for Stormont.

It is very difficult to pick out a new leader that is strong enough to cope with the challenges of leading Unionism in a positive manner, but if Peter is unable to continue i will put my money on Arlene Foster.

If Robinson does not go the DUP are history.

Post Robinson the DUP will need to get back to canvassing hard in the working class Unionist areas to selvage their vote and in the middle class areas they are toast.

The UUP and TUV will have a golden chance to make head room. My prefered option is for the post Robinson DUP and UUP to become a single Unionist party, but I can’t see it.

Strange that a few quid and the subsequent attempt to pay the money back will take the head of the FM. yet a paedophile scandal and cover up leaves another party leader relativity untarnished???

Of course both should go, but I’ve a feeling Gerry has got lucky and the Robbo affair, and the other scandals which have yet to come to light, will take the heat off him.

A real “post Paisley” party. That will take time. However with the TUV capturing the far right anti-everything constituecy, the two Unionist Parties will need to move together to stop a Sinn Fein first Minister.

Anecdotal, but the general feeling among (non-voting) ‘pro-union’ people is nonchalance and indifference.
The (Conservative) and UUP vote will remain as it is because of inertia. The TUV will fight it out with the DUP for the hardliners. At Westminster, this will matter little, because the Tory/UUP voters are indifferent. Maybe Stranngford, South Antrim, Upper Bann etc if Sir Reg can mount an effective campaign, but inertia favours the incumbent.

therefore, I’d love to see Greg take over from Robbo. The sooner this bunch of neanderthals is back to their pre 1999 status as a small rump party, the better for the Unionist community. and I’m a fellow Derryman, with his unholiness, Greg. and a nationalist.

Peter Robinson is easily the sharpest political operator in Stormont. I can’t see the DUP voting to get rid of the man who is most responsible for that party’s finesse as an election machine, not to mention revealing the Shinners to be bunch of dumb goons in suits as opposed to the savvy negotiators they that the UUP’s ineptitude made them look like.

Peter Robinson will be exonerated by the officials that he has asked to investigate his conduct because there is no ‘duty to report’ (whistleblowers charter) in any of the codes of conduct regulating public life, so he cannot be held to be in breach of a duty that he did not possess.

He can then point to that official exoneration of his conduct, and say that he intends to get down to the business of state, calling for an end to ‘libellous’ comment about that conduct.

So he is legally in the clear, but may not be politically in the clear in regard to Iris. He might be better to release a statement claiming that they intend to separate. That gets her out of his hair, and won’t then worry DUPers that images of the two together could damage the party. He doesn’t actually have to separate if that is not his intention, but it would certainly be helpful to him if he did.

However, even if he did not, I think his worth to the party outweighs his ‘baggage’ and as long as the party makes the same calculation…

  35. If Robinson stays the DUP will definitely lose North Antrim to the TUV. East Belfast will be Empey’s if he decides to stand and Strangford will go the UU/C.
South Antrim, East Antrim, East Derry and Upper Bann will also be up for grabs with the three-way split.
If Robinson stays on the DUP will lose seats, and they can forget about North Down. If he is replaced the losses will not be as big.

As much as I enjoy your drunken 6am posts, Pascal’s wager has been entirely discredited, notably by Bertrand Russell, who asked how we could know that a God who endowed us with the faculty of reason would prefer us to abandon it in favour of blind faith. It is now considered a comfort blanket for believers and of no persuasive value at all. What if you have the wrong God? How do I choose the right one – the one threatening the most wicked damnation?

More on topic, I hope we’re spared Campbell as I doubt the peace process would survive him. Is he related to Ken Campbell, donor to Iris/McCambley?
