A 49-year-old man has been arrested following the discovery of explosive material in a flat on Dorset Street in Dublin. RTÉ News has learned that the commercial explosive was illegally brought into the country as part of a security operation by another country. It is understood the man and the explosives ended up in Ireland as part of a test exercise which appears to have gone wrong. Gardaí received a phone call this morning from a security service abroad, telling them that a man was in a flat in Dorset St with around 100g of commercial explosive.

It is understood the explosive was one of eight pieces of contraband planted by the authorities in the luggage of unsuspecting passengers at Bratislava Airport in Slovakia last weekend as part of a test of security procedures. Seven were detected by airport security, but the eighth – 90g of research development explosive or RDX – was put in the luggage of a Slovakian electrician who lives and works in Dublin. The 49-year-old unwittingly brought the material to Dublin when he returned from Christmas holidays.

The Slovakian Embassy in Dublin declined to comment but Slovakian deputy prime minister Robert Kallinak has conveyed his profound regret to [Irish Justice Minister] Mr Ahern.

If your addition proves to be true, Pete, It beggars belief. A State putting explosives in the luggage of a citizen without their knowledge. I think their State Security Organization needs a shake up.
RTE radio reported about 40 minutes ago that the guy was set up by Slovakian authorities testing security at one of their airports. 8 items planted, 7 detected. Czechs reported to have sent a ” telex ” to Dublin airport, but not either received or acted on. The passenger has been released from Garda custody , completely innocent.

Irish police have released a man held over an explosives find, after Slovakian authorities admitted planting them in his luggage.
The explosive was one of eight pieces of contraband placed with unsuspecting passengers at Bratislava Airport last weekend, broadcaster RTE reported.
The 49-year-old unwittingly brought the material into Dublin when he returned from his Christmas holidays.
He was arrested on Tuesday morning but has since been released without charge.
Minister for Justice Dermot Ahern said he was very concerned that Irish police had not been alerted for three days.
Airport security detected seven of the illicit items, but the eighth – 90g of research development explosive – managed to escape detection.
Slovakian police alerted their Irish counterparts on Tuesday morning, and the man’s flat near the city centre was cordoned off while bomb disposal experts removed the explosives for further examination.

That’s just how easy it is done, Eleanor. Once your luggage is out of your sight in the airport baggage handling system can “security” plant anything at all … drugs, explosives, money, porn, DNA, whatever ….. for one to be caught with whenever you are reunited hours later.
And the irony is, that if you decide to travel without luggage, that is something which can raise a red flag too.

Just as an aside for those of you who lock their luggage. Don’t waste your money. A few years ago while coming back from the far east, I had my suitcase fitted with an extra strong lock. It was just shortly after 9/11 so we were very restricted as to what we could carry on. I packed my very expensive camera in my check on. When I got home, I saw that a thief somewhere on the multi-airport transit had cut through the zipper pullers attached to the zips , the ones invariably made of very soft material, and had stolen my camera. As I said, save your money. If a thief, or explosives smuggler wants to get inside your bag, they will.

Political correctness ensures that profiling isn’t used to target the highest risk social group (i.e. Muslims) for terrorist attacks against aircraft, thereby wasting resources to ensure that the low risk groups are targeted in equal measure to the high risk group. Totally nuts.
