“Unionism Decayed 1997-2007″ by David Vance: book review
I initially wrote this when the book was first published three years ago; whilst certain elements of it now sound dated, its basic premise that the period of 1997-2007 was a period of irreversible decay for Northern Irish Unionism can still be argued as a valid opinion. My own feeling is that it did indeed [...] read our review » -
Books: Listening to Van Morrison…
Great little review of Listening to Van Morrison by Griel Marcus… It’s a short book, not a biography or a career survey, but an attempt to follow those moments in Morrison’s music, as he’s made it from his first records with Them, from Belfast in 1965 to the present day, when something happens that breaks [...] read our review »

Is Fianna Fail the new Woolworths of Irish politics?
It’s not published until 3rd March, but one book I recommend you place an advance order for from Slugger’s Bookstore is James Harkin’s Niche. Belfast émigré Harkin examines a number of stories from business, culture and politics and comes to a single insight: everywhere the broad middle is collapsing. He offers Woolworths as an iconic exemplar [...] read our review »

This old vids getting a bit over used now.
Maybe its time for Unionism to come up with some new ideas.
Having said all that Jim Allister is a pretty well qualified candidate for this ridicule.
I wonder if the script was written using a £300 pen claimed on expenses?
I didn’t realise anyone in the DUP had a sense of humour – some good lines there – but the use of this bit from Downfall , I’m sure I’ve seen the exact same bit used for something else but what?
rapunsel
Just about everything. the last one I saw took the piss out of Liverpool FC.
“a £300 pen claimed on expenses?”
No as the fees office refused that particular foolish claim.
It’s been used for a good 18 months or so to comment on everything from badly launched online computer games (XBox or EA MMO’s) to footballers.
I was honestly expecting a BombayTV counter attack.
Jim speaks very nicely about Slugger’s politician of the year too:
Actual and disastrous joint authority with IRA/Sinn Fein is the reality of the moment, courtesy of the DUP’s lust for power, any power, even that which comes from holding the bloodstained hand of Sinn Fein. It is this which TUV unapologetically is pledged to oppose.
Had a great laugh over the lunch hour. Congrats to whoever put this together
I thought the script was quite funny; especially the end comments.
That was funny! Haven’t laughed so hard in a long time.
I prefer the version “Hitler finds our that John and Edward are through to round 7 of X factor”
oh dear
This makes even Sammy look like Noel Coward…
And the funniest part of all is that its actually the children who are the ones in the bunker, cowering as Der Punter rants and raves to Reichsmarcshall Dodds and Iris Braun.
And while reworking of someone else’s stale material is a DUP trademark move, it only appeals to the faithful- who are the ones who left in disillusion when der Punter signed the non-aggression pact with their ideological enemies.
As for the Free P rump, will it really be impressed by foul language?
As the old saying goes “He who laughs last, laughs longest”
At face value, rather amusing.
When you begin to dig, you see it becomes pithy and fluid, much like DUP policy these days on almost everything!
“This makes even Sammy look like Noel Coward…”
Anyone else think he looked more like Gail Platt/Tilsley during his fun packed conference speech?
cushy glenn
I see the sense of humour by-pass was successful.
Careful or you’ll be chewing the carpet next.
Yeah its funny quiet witty and fairly purile but hey this is what passes for DUP politics these days – far better than policies
I wanted to be a fly on the wall at Holywood Road for the past few weeks now.
Thanks!

Someone’s very worried somewhere about TUV to put that childish drivel together.
Maybe worried about UCUNF too if they’re trying to tie them into this. Although it is amusing and a damn sight better than the leprachaun one a couple of weeks ago
They crowbarred UCUNF into it because he said a german word that sounded like it.
This is about as funny as motor neurone’s disease.
Although I think the post’s title warrent deserves a pun:
“DUP go guerilla on the TUV…”
They must have got those tactics from their new friends in Sinn Fein
The Empire Strikes Back
Just booked Sammy Wilson there for a nightly turn at the Belfast Empire he has entitled his show:
Save Ulster From Necrophilia: The Battle of the Undead.
His song: ‘One Führer At A Time Sweet Jesus!’
-will be available from all good outlets in time for Xmas order now to guarantee disappointment….
Ulster Uber Alles
It is funny, but not as funny as the reaction of all those anti-DUP trolls on here who are kicking themselves for not thinking of it first….
Election 2010: Who Shall You Be Drumming For?
Yes you have got a point there LD Hitler spent ten years in politics and 11 years in power. IPsnr spent *40* years in politics and *18* months in power.
An observation made at the official launch of The Fall of The House of Paisley (David Gordon) quite a few anti DUP unionist trolls were there -including Jim Ulster-Alister himself – who has collected quite a few Lambeg Drummers to drum up support…
Christ, the trollery on this thread.
Someone you don’t agree with did something a bit clever and funny if not massively original.
Get over it.
The one thing it gets across very well is the line that JA wants direct rule restored and he should be out there overtly campaigning for it.
@Paul Evans
Ah come off it will you!
Someone posts messages about the real fall of the ex Dear Leader and the decline of his party and you take umbrage and the ‘Lord thy God’s’ name in vain – you *are* strange sort of DUP supporter….
Different Drummer
I’m sure there’s a point in there somewhere, if only you weren’t choking on your own bile I might be able to discern just what it is…..
Allister Supporters: Humourless Sods! and in other news Bear Craps in Woods
Yes Lambeg
But it’s not a sense of humor that counts to be effective here it is a sense of the absurd…
The absurd? In that case Allister’s flyin!
ha ha…I’m surprise TUV fans aren’t on here complaining about equating Allister with The infamous Nazi dictator.
No LD
in the sense that the Lambeg now beats for three unionist parties and not just one…
Interviewer: Now sir you have come here today to demonstrate your support for DUP can you tell me is there a difference between DUP supporting Lambeg drum sound and that played by a TUV supporter?
Lambeg Drummer (DUP) Aye of course there is. You see we use well seasoned drums most of these instruments are over forty years old ye know.
Interviewer: Yes I see that you have a little woodworm there shouldn’t you treat with something?
Lambeg Drummer (DUP) Naw we tried that and we found it effects the sound.
Interviewer: So will you representing the DUP at the Battle of The Drums?
Lambeg Drummer (DUP) Aye I will be leading our group off into the arena on the opening night.
Interviewer That’s the view from the DUP Lambeg drumming school here, now it’s back to you on the blog in the studio…
I don’t think I’d find this funny even if I had a third class honours degree in Modern History and was a DUP member
Poor. Don’t think I laughed once, and I’m no TUV supporter. Shows how low the DUP has stooped in this battle with Allister, to portray him as Hitler, even in a “comic” way, is pretty reprehensible imho.
aaahhhhhhhh – you poor little muppet!
Your are right you didn’t make the grade there…
Now Shooting up -the charts its Sammy and The DUP Gospel Choir
All together Now!!
One Fuehrer at a Time Sweet Jesus
I’m only following my instincts, sweet Iris
Help me to love you a little more.
Your eye may be a wandering but you know where I am.
You are at the top of the ladder we all had to climb.
Do not be tempted by Jim-Ulster-Al-is-ter
One Fuehrer at a time.
Chorus:
One Fuehrer at a time sweet Jesus
That’s all I’m asking from you.
Just give me the strength
To do everyday what I have to do.
Yesterday’s gone sweet Iris
And tomorrow may never be mine.
Lord help you sweet Iris, we can still do it to-get-her
One Fuehrer at a time.
Do you remember, the Ulster Hall rallies when the Dear Leader walked among paramilitary men?
Well Iris if you’re looking down from the top of the ladder
It’s worse now, than then.
Cheating and stealing, violence and crime
That was his Association yours and mine
So for my sake, sweet Iris let me be your lov-er
One Fuehrer at a time.
DD
and you say the video isn’t funny? Still your initials are apt given you’ve just made a giant t*t of yourself with that offering.
It wasn’t meant for you to enjoy…
DD
Mission accomplished then.
Would be very surprised if the DUP could laugh at itself in any case. But you can give us a demonstration if you like…
Continuing the (non) comic theme I also watched the video that Jim-Ulster-Alister posted in ‘reply’ to the ‘smears’ of his former party . I must say that too brought a smile to the lips – sitting there in his comfy chair with the flora pattern to match his flora rhetoric (definitely a change in style from the usual barking of his former colleagues).
One thing that the DUP vid will give him cause to think about will be the use of a desk/fake office for his future broadcasts to his people – I’ll give you that much. But the Nolan show and the radio is not his strength – he’s more suited going head to head with other Unionists in a television studio – that won him 66,000 votes and he got the most 1st preference votes in the consistency of North Antrim or so a Unionist party saltwart told me. So for you DUB – one and all the war is already over before it has started….

Different Drumer-so smug he said it twice……
No I missed out the correction and the rhyme the first time but I did not republish that for you.
On smugness – if I was I most certainly shan’t be if Jim-Ulster-Alister wins the North Antrim seat for the TUV I will be very worried indeed.
Then it won’t be me repeating myself it will be the year 1974 – a threeway split in Unionism – SF the largest party – Unionist and Loyalists take action against administration that doesn’t reogise majority rule. Despite what pro SF commentators have written recently The DUP on the issue of majority rule is moving towards the TUV position.
Different drummer,
Whatever about this parody video – Allister’s own videos are so ranting and just downright funny that perhaps they’re beyond parody!
Yes CC that is 100% correct Jim-Ulster-Alister’s **own** videos are beyond parody I agree.
But that should not make those who oppose him self satisfied – some of the best minds in Germany noted how absurd Hitler was but didn’t stop him taking power…
To the DUP he is just a rival but to many thousands of others he and the TUV will return all the British legal gains and social reforms of the past few years to dust.
The hate and violence against minorities is bad enough and getting worse at the moment.
The consequences of **any** TUV electoral gains at the next general election would be horrific.
