“the result of the match cannot be changed and the match cannot be replayed”

Fri 20 November 2009, 11:28pm

RTÉ reports FIFA’s official response to the FAI request to replay their World Cup play-off match against France. From the RTÉ report.

FIFA said in a statement: ‘FIFA has today 20 November 2009 replied to the request made by the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) to replay the 2010 FIFA World Cup play-off match held on 18 November 2009 between France and the Republic of Ireland in Paris. ‘In the reply, FIFA states that the result of the match cannot be changed and the match cannot be replayed. As is clearly mentioned in the Laws of the Game, during matches, decisions are taken by the referee and these decisions are final.’

Adds The BBC report the statement by the French Football Federation [FFF]

“The FFF understands the disappointment and bitterness of the Irish players, management and supporters,” read a statement. “The federation never sought to deny the refereeing error which saw the equalising French goal allowed. “At the end of the match and because French football itself has suffered in the past by events of a similar nature, the FFF management expressed their regrets and sympathy to their Irish counterparts. “During matches, decisions are taken by the referee and these decisions are final. As a result, the result of the match cannot be changed and the match cannot be replayed. “The Fifa decision is binding and applies to both federations.”

In view of the comments by Thierry Henry, conceding that a replay would be the “fairest solution”, a clever move now by the Football Association of Ireland would be to open up some quiet channels with the World Cup’s host country government in South Africa. Approaches to FIFA and the French are unlikely to yield results in the absence of the kind of moral pressure that the South Africans could bring to bear.

    Peter,

You can put this down to me becoming more cynical in my dotage…

Thierry Henry knows he can say that safely in the knowledge it wont be acted upon. He also realises he’s in serious trouble reputation wise. He went from being one of the most respected sportsmen in football to being a disgrace.

I know sponsors have come out to back him, but I suspect this is a bit like a manager receiving the full confidence of the board.

South Africa have no say I’m afraid.

i’m not sure that FIFA have considered their reputation here. We have been barraged with the ‘fair play’ theme for donkey’s years. We then have a situation whereby outside regulation time a player blatantly does not adhere to the fair play theme.

I know this has been the cry in Scotland for years but the so called ‘big’ nations in football seem to be allowed to do what they will.

Well at least when FIFA wheel out more of the fair play shite we can marvel at the arseholery.

Talking of arseholery, haven’t these six county team boys got any class? I remember when their dream died the other month that there was not a gloat at all(or any that I viewed), yet over several threads now they have been letting their class show.

honestly… this fair play thing is complete and utter shite. fifa is a money making machine… nothing more, nothing less. the spirit of international football comes from the supporters of national teams and their common passions (football and nation) not the beaurocracy that manages it.

henry lifting his hand during extra time while on the goal line during a live/die world cup qualifying match is pure human instict… just like a defender bumping a striker and pulling at his top (both of which are ‘cheating’ by the word of the rules). yes yes…. cheatin’ bastard, but no different than anyone else on the pitch (boys in green included)

what the fai should be protesting and bringing to light is the fact that fifa changed the rules during the competition. when fifa saw that italy, russia, portugal, and france were in jeopardy of not qualifying, and therefore ‘costing fifa and those FAs’ tons of cash, they moved the fucking goal posts.

that is the travesty of the situation. don’t get me wrong, i’ll be cheering against france in the cup, but in the jovial spirit that should define these competitions and not for any hatred of the french.

Good post. With the French statement this is pretty much over. There’s work to do for FIFA if they’d like to restore footballs tarnished image in Ireland, could be as simple as commiting to some measures to prevent reoccurance and committing to refraining from rule changes mid-competition ever again.

The FIFA rules allow that if there is a technical decision during a match that is wrong, which influences the outcome then they can ask for the match to be replayed.

In that particular match the referee gave an indirect free kick when he should have given a penalty. In Wednesday´s match the ref didnt see an infringement. He didn´t have the benefit of watching the slow motion that many folk watched and now condemn one of the greatest footballers of all time for. Watch it in real time, it is hand ball and it is an instinctive reaction.

The match won´t be replayed, Henry´s reputation is intact, he won´t be abused anywhere as long as he doesn´t pub crawl in Dublin.

I agree with you to a certain degree, part of the football lover in me has died over the last couple of days.

As I said as someone who spends thousands of euros that I can ill aford travelling to watch NI I can empathise with my ROI counterparts. There is something wrong in football.

Someone said in another thread that it was the collesium style stadiums with fans begging for blood. I disagree with that, like football hooliganism the trouble is now outside the grounds. People have an emotional attachment to their televisions, if they see something they don´t like it spills over on to the internet.

Over the last few weeks I have been amazed and pretty disgusted at the shocking hatred shown towards the two Irish teenagers known as Jedward. Now I have only seen their pics, I have not seen them perform, but the level of hatred shown toward these two TEENAGERS has been nothing short of a crime. Being cock sure like most teenage boys, thinking you have talent (I thought I was ther next John Lennon at 18) and trying to get your face on TV all seem pretty normal, yet these are in fact the crimes people have condemned these teo young fellas for. There has also been an air of casual anti Irish feeling in the on-line hatred coming from the great British public, but mainly it´s the sinister aggresion shown towards these two boys that I object to.

It is similar to what happened the other night in Paris. A 32 year old Professional footballer who has often been heralded as the model professional, was seen to handle the ball. He did not do a Maradonna but he did give his team an unfair advantage.

To me, as someone who has played the game, it was a straight case of furthering the video evidence debate. To those in the stadium I thought yes they must be gutted, but then the on-line onslaught began.

The internet has given “people their say”. “Fucking Cheating Bastard”, “Dirty French C***”,”Cheating Bastard”, “Aragones Was Right About This Bastard”. Just some of the sentiments I have taken from a facebook anti Henry thread. Somewhat ironically some these posters have questioned the suitability of Henry as a role model.

Again I sense xenophobia, many English players have done a lot worse than what Henry did, but cheat isn´t a word we associate with the English despite the fact you could fill a DVD full of Steven Gerards dives and uppercuts.

So the online “preservers of moral codes” demand a replay, as if it is there right. Arrange marches, start up petitions, hate campaigns etc. What power the internet has, if only it could be used to try and change something worth while. The continual exploitation of workers in sout east Asia by western commercial companies perhaps?

It is the greedy football authorities who are also at fault here. The money in TV revenue, has overtaken the needs of the supporters. The noise of stadium is there for TV benefit, to highlight the gladiator style presentation being beamed into homes on digital widescreen high definition. The fan at the stadium has become a prop.

Henry was condemned by the high definition slow motion of television, despite the experts sympathising with him and stating he didn´t “cheat”, this wasn´t good enough for TV networks clamouring to the facebook generation.

Yes, part of my love of football has died, not because of Thierry Henry (one of the best footballers of all time), no, because it is the TV networks who have created a new monster, that has done it for me. They value the ignorant couch potatoe beer sweller, perched in front of his wide screen with his remote control, he is in his directors box and will be treated as such. If he says Henry should die, then Henry will die. His are the only thumbs that count.

The deciding of seeding for the knockout games and the giving of the 2nd leg to their seeded teams in mid-competition makes FIFA look a shambles.

I hope some good football is played in South Africa but i’m personally beyond caring who gets the title in these competitions anymore.

“It’s been on every national news channel, including the satellites, national newspapers from LA to Tokyo and several blogs on this site ”

Most news is controlled by news agencies these days. Real injustiecs rarely get reported. It´s generally the hysteria that gets reported.

“including numerous posts from a disinterested Doctor Who)”

Never anywhere have I suggested I was dis-interested. Flaberghasted by the lack of perspective perhaps.

“Not at all. That’s a unionist wet dream.
I think FIFA are happy to endorse foul play when it suits them.”

What it has to do with unionism is beyond me, god only knows why you mention it. Again you fail to see the clear differnce in the scenario in Bahrain match and the one in Paris. You also conveniently forget that the referee had a decent game up to the Henry hand ball incident, denying France an off side goal and refusing a penalty, although he really should have also booked Anelka. Are you suggesting FIFA subsequently contacted him and told him to let France win.

“Played it all my life, Doctor.”

Football pongo on Grandstand TV consoles don´t count.

“Anyone who understands football will be aware that FIFA can do, more or less, as they please.
In this case it pleases them to do nothing to uphold their own stated position of fair play.”

Nonsense, the can of worms that would be opened by replaying this match are plain and simple for all to see. A more constructive argument would be to add to the debate about video technology.

“One more thing, if Ireland had won this game, under these circumstances, I’d be demanding a replay.”

Of course you would, like you where when ROI got an unjust penalty against Georgia. Like most of the professional footballers in the game, I too recognise that this is a nonsense.

The ROI where denied by a dodgy goal, the sort of thing that happens all the time. You will see at least 20 times this weekend. Get over it and look forward to the next tournament, the draw for Euro 2012 takes place on Feb 7. Good luck.

    Your point?

“Never anywhere have I suggested I was dis-interested. Flaberghasted by the lack of perspective perhaps.”

    I refer to your earlier remark;

“The rest of the world does not give a monkeys pink arse about it, get over yourself man.”

Are you speaking as an outsider, perhaps?

“What it has to do with unionism is beyond me, god only knows why you mention it.”

    Try harder.

“You also conveniently forget that the referee had a decent game up to the Henry hand ball incident, denying France an off side goal and refusing a penalty, although he really should have also booked Anelka. Are you suggesting FIFA subsequently contacted him and told him to let France win.”

    Don’t be so obtuse!
The referee’s behaviour before he allowed the goal is irrelevant. There were four infringements leading to the goal and neither referee nor linesmen called any of them. FIFA’s responsibility was to determine, in light of video evidence and Henry’s admission, if a compromise could be reached and they chose not to.

“Football pongo on Grandstand TV consoles don´t count.”

That’s very clever and possibly a winning riposte on the playground.

“Nonsense, the can of worms that would be opened by replaying this match are plain and simple for all to see.”

    And?

“Of course you would, like you where when ROI got an unjust penalty against Georgia.”

How do you know how I reacted to that?
What assumptions are you basing your comments on?

“Like most of the professional footballers in the game, I too recognise that this is a nonsense.”

Unlike you I am not a professional footballer.
I believe in fair play and not the wideboy attitude that many seem to be advocating.

I repeat, if this had happened to NI, my attitude would be exactly the same.
Official acceptance of injustice, whether it be Government or FIFA, is unacceptable and deserves challenge. Expediency is not an excuse.

It’s not your opinion I undervalue, it’s the way you express it.
I don’t know if your a unionist (not that it matters), my comment was aimed at a perception running through the thread.
    Never argue with the wife.
I’m off for a good wallow.
    Good luck.
