And the Slugger Awards Playlist…
This is my nomination for the music play list up to the point I make my welcoming remarks. I might even try to work some of the lyrics into those same remarks:
A little less conversation, a little more action please
All this aggravation aint satisfactioning me
A little more bite and a little less bark
A little less fight and a little more spark
Let us have your suggestions… And remember time is running out to add your own nominations (we finish next Tuesday when the readers’ panel will sift through to make the shortlists for the judges -more later!!)… For Politician of the Year (the currently unelected Jim Allister is walking it by a country mile just now), tell us who and why they deserve it… And Politicians, tell us which campaign has impressed you most throughout the last year!!

Mick, do you know Spoon’s “The Underdog”?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q1hZVDLkJDc
Looking at the lyrics in black and white I suppose they could be misunderstood as menacing, but it’s just another pop tune with a whiff of existentialist despair, and your Elvis snippet reminded me of it in a NI context. Nor for the first time, either! Best of luck with your evening.
Sample lyric:
“Cause you don’t talk to the water boy
and there’s so much you could learn but you don’t want to know,
You will not back up an inch ever,
that’s why you will not survive,
The thing that I tell you now
It may not go over well
And it may not be photo-op
in the way that I spell it out
But you won’t hear from the messenger,
don’t wanna know bout something that you don’t understand,
You got no fear of the underdog,
that’s why you will not survive”
And live from downtown Berlin 1930…..The Slugger Von Toole Award for Politician of the Year is……….
Trouble- Shampoo
Uh-Oh We’re In Trouble, [Yeah Yeah!] Uh-Oh We’re In Trouble….
you can call me al – Paul Simon
Why am I soft in the middle
The rest of my life is so hard
I need a photo-opportunity
I want a shot at redemption
Money money money by Abba seems pretty apt.
Like it guys… keep them coming… I’ll add a Spotify list for those of you that have an account so you can add to what we’ve got so far…
If them-uns on the hill deliver P&J i think we’ll need to relecutantly use this
Fatboy Slim – Praise You

Mick
How about Elton John’s ‘Your Song’ with a large backdrop of David Cameron?
“And you can tell everybody this is your song
It may be quite simple but now that it’s done
I hope you don’t mind
I hope you don’t mind that I put down in words
How wonderful life is while you’re in the world”
The Beano, oneill and Chekov could start a circle jerk and…
Dennis Brown – Sitting here watching
Whoa yeah…
Whoa yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Alright…
Sitting here watching fools like themselves when
They should all be thinking of getting to know themselves
While life goes on everyone’s got to stand strong
You can’t surrender, no no no
Giving your heart and soul to vanity, yeah
Makes your life filled with pain and misery
While life goes on everyone’s got to stand strong
You can’t surrender, no no no, oh no
Whoa yeah…
Got to be good to yourself, yeah
Whoa yeah, yeah
Whoa yeah, whoa yeah
Ah yeah
Sitting here watching fools like themselves when
They should all be thinking of getting to know themselves
While life goes on everyone’s got to stand strong
You can’t surrender, no no no, whoa
Giving your heart and soul to vanity, yeah
Makes one’s life filled with pain and misery
While life goes on everyone’s got to stand strong
You can’t surrender, no no, oh no
Remember You’re A Womble
When the sun doesn’t shine
And it’s cloudy and grey
And it’s only the beginning
Or the wombling day.
And you’ve got to do the washing
For Madame Colet.
Remember
remember
remember
remember
Remember
remember
remember:
Remember you’re a womble
Remember you’re a womble
Remember you’re a womble
What a Beautiful Day
The Levellers
[Chorus]
What a beautiful day,
I’m the king of all time,
And nothing is impossible,
In my all powerful mind.
Was on the fifth of November,
When time it went back,
Some say that that’s impossible,
But you and I, we never looked back,
And wasn’t it incredible,
So beautiful and above all,
Just to see the fuse get lit this time,
To light a real bonfire for all time.
[Chorus]
I was drinking in my nightclub,
It felt good to be back,
When Hepburn said, “I love you”,
And Flynn said, “Make mine a double, Jack”
Was then we planned the revolution,
To make things better for all time,
When Guevara said “That’s crazy”,
And ordered up a bottle of wine.
[Chorus]
[Chorus]
In there on the big screen,
Every night I’ve seen,
The way all things could be,
For me,
For me, for me, for me.
The news broke after midnight,
That we’d pulled the temples down without a sound,
But the generals they were hiding,
And the ministers, well, they’d all gone to ground,
Wealth re-distribution,
Became the new solution,
So I got a paper bag,
But you got the one with all the holes.
[Chorus]
What a beautiful day, (what a beautiful day)
I’m the king of all time, (it’s a beautiful day)
And nothing is impossible, (it’s a beautiful, )
In my all powerful mind. (it’s a beautiful day)
Oh yeah,
Nothing is impossible (it’s a beautiful, )
In my all powerful mind. (it’s a beautiful day)
That’s because,
Nothing is impossible,
In my all powerful mind.
How about ‘Politician’ by Cream (best band of the 60s by a country mile)
“Hey now baby, get into my big black car.
Hey now baby, get into my big black car.
I want to just show you what my politics are.
I’m a political man and I practice what I preach.
I’m a political man and I practice what I preach.
So don’t deny me baby, not while you’re in my reach.
I support the left, though I’m leaning, leaning to the right.
I support the left, though I’m leaning to the right.
But I’m just not there when it’s coming to a fight.
Hey now baby, get into my big black car.
Hey now baby, get into my big black car.
I want to just show you what my politics are.”
