Yes, design. The impulse behind conspiracy theories is the same as that behind belief in astrology, numerology, Feng Shui and, well, God. All these things allow us to imagine that some structure (either malign or benevolent) orders our terrifyingly unaccommodating cosmos. I’ve got news for you. There’s no pattern. Nobody is behind the curtain. People are cruel and stupid. We’re all going to die. Indeed, the universe itself will eventually give in to entropy and dissipate into formless soup. And that will be that.
Heh. Just don’t tell John Waters..
I’m sure that the immensely talented John Waters (http://www.heretv.com/johnwaters/) is much too busy directing wonderfully zany movies such as Hag in a Black Leather Jacket(1964), Mondo Trasho (1970), Pink Flamingos (1974),and Hairspray(1988) to be arsed about a polyfilla piece like this in a dreary provincial newspaper.

Lovely article by Donald Clarke. I enjoyed the moon landing bit: If it was faked why haven’t they faked another one? :^)
That said, Clarke’s uncritical adoption of so many Americanisms spoilt it a little for me. I think he used “traction” twice. Why do so many Irish journalists do this? To me it’s an affront to all those quirky uses of language that have always made Irish writers special.

But then he’s got the wrong end of the stick in regard to John Waters. As I’m sure he knows.
I wouldn’t necessarily assume that Clarke is an Irish journalist though.. Not that I know either way.
