“It’s been a whirlwind of a day”

Infrared image of Jupiter impactThe answer to the question I asked yesterday, “Impact on Jupiter?”, appears to be Yes. Nasa’s Infrared Telescope Facility in Hawaii has identified further evidence indicating an impact. Via the Sky & Telescope report, Leigh Fletcher, a NASA postdoctoral fellow at JPL who worked on the new images, was twittering throughout. New Scientist has more details of the impact scar “about the size of the Earth.” And the Guardian adds some details of the initial observation from the amateur astronomer responsible, Anthony Wesley – original observation log here. Adds Space Weather has more images including an animated gif [below the fold].Animated gif of Jupiter with impact scar near southern pole – created by Dennis Simmons of Brisbane Australia on July 20th.

    Not interested, RQ?

Just move along to the next post.

There you go. That wasn’t difficult now, was it?

If I wanted to know about space weather, id visit a space weather website pete. tell me how on God’s earth this is a comment on Northern Ireland’s politics or culture!?

RQ: I don’t know how justifies telling us about his space fetish on a site dedicated to “Northern Ireland politics and culture”. When challenged on his sudden urge to publicly declare his passion for golf, he stated that there was a noteworthy and pertinent “human interest” angle.

Give over lads. There are quite a few of us who enjoy the skies as viewed from Northern Ireland and, as Pete notes, it isn’t compulsory to read any article and you don’t pay for the bandwidth it uses.

Actually Jupiter is very relevant to all of us. If it wasn´t for this giant planet in our solar system, one of the many objects that regularly colide with Jupiter would probably find it´s way into the earths orbit and end the irish question for good.

DoctorWho, ever heard the phrase ‘if your granny had balls she’d be your granda’…I think it sums up your post perfectly.
Everything is relevant if you think hard enough about it. I just don’t see how Jupiter has much to do with NI politics or culture.

Surely proof of intelligent design that we have a big planet up there to hoover up all the asteroids and keep us safe from them?

It can also, occasionally, sling them our way.

“Surely proof of intelligent design that we have a big planet up there to hoover up all the asteroids and keep us safe from them?”

And also proof on the conditions needed to support life on a planet. The accidental positions of the moon and other planets all contribute to support life on earth.

Of course an “intelligent designer” would surely be intelligent enough to clear up all the space debris after creation. Sounds like God is a bit of a cowboy builder, probably had too many tea and jaffa cake breaks during the creation.
