“Tranquility base here.”

Mon 20 July 2009, 11:36pm

I mentioned on Thursday the 40th anniversary of the launch of Apollo 11. Four days later, on 20th July 1969, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the Moon. As the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter discovered the evidence is still there. Nasa has a dedicated website marking the mission. But, below the fold, here are a couple of clips from In the Shadow of the Moon – The descent and landing of the Eagle and Armstrong and Aldrin step onto the Moon’s surface, and Aldrin’s own lunar first. And here’s Apollo 11′s “forgotten astronaut” Mike Collins on orbiting the Moon alone in the Columbia command module.

The descent and landing of the Eagle.

Armstrong and Aldrin step onto the Moon’s surface, and Aldrin’s own lunar first.

Just think, if the US (and indeed everyone) hadn’t had to bailout the banks we could have had time machines, robotic dolphins and all sorts of crazy stuff.

Did you know that half the people to walk on the moon have been of Scottish / Ulster Scots descent?

NO. Really? In american high school we were told the moon landings were a human triumph. how mistaken and simpliste… but then again, your grammar schools are of such a higher quality, you would know better.

    by the way. Which half?

Did they have a seperate landing site?… and ultimately, who gives a shit?

Oh, perhaps the tenacious and triumphant Ulster-Scots, thats who. Must be that old frontier/manifest destiny thing again.

Supposedly when Apollo 11 command module pilot Michael Collins was once confronted with an application form with a question on race, he filled in ‘human’.
