IRIA, yes, Bairbre DeBrun was just elected again to the EU...but let me ask you this, IRIA---if Mitch Mclaughlin, conor murphy or even gerry adams had run...would they have won. I think not. I see Bairbre's win as a win for a capable person that both sides have no quarrel with...to say it was a win for sinn fein...I see it as a win for Bairbre DeBrun.

The problem with History is - as SF are finding out - it has a habit of catching up with you.

They are experts in trying to define and shape the narrative to their advantage. That's why they are where they are today. But as the realisation dawns that the movement lost the war and with so many of those involved still alive and now prepared to ask what it was all for, it gets harder and harder to suppress uncomfortable facts about the Hunger Strike, who authorised the murders of the disappeared, agents within Sinn Fein / PIRA, etc, etc, etc.

The truth for all of us is that the Leadership of SF - and of the major Unionist Parties - are so embedded in the pain of our past that we cannot really move on while they remain as reminders. We all need to consign them to history and get a fresh lot in to enable us to truely move on and develop an accommodation for the future.

To borrow a phrase for Gerry, Peter and Reg "Time to go lads"

May be true, but didn’t SF just win an election?

Hitler won elections too. But you know the real prize for all this information is a Spotlight programme. We'll see if SF win the next election with Gerry Adams on the point of resigning.

10 young men died, all of them needlessly. Let them rest. The blame lies at a certain lady’s door.

The blame also lies with a certain street wise cute hoor who seems to have taken advantage of an opportunity that arose to get his unpopular movement into politics on the back of the popularity of these men's efforts. While posing as their brother in cause he used them to fight his battle because they were not as aware of the big picture as he was and, ah sure, aren't they there to be used, weren't they volunteers.

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for Gerry Adams' sake, for they shall be filled full of platitudes.

posted by Kathy C

What has happened is that 'brownie' aka Gerry Adams has lost credibility. He has lied about a song the prisoners sang long before the song was even written. His loss of credibility has flowed over to sinn fein. They are not believed. Whether Danny Morrison's time line is true or not is not the issue...the issue is that people have lost trust in sinn fein leaders and what is believeable is that gerry adams would make a decision that would benefit himself first, sinn fein second and others including the hunger strikers third. It is time for Gerry Adams to walk away from the political scene.

Who is benefiting from this continual scab picking?
10 young men died, all of them needlessly. Let them rest. The blame lies at a certain lady's door.

Irony: code word is "who".

The comm above was dated July 26 1981 and at this stage six hunger strikers had already died, with four dying on hunger strike.

There is a good letter in today's Derry Journal from ex-Blanketman Thomas Dixie Elliot.

He is suggesting that Adams was determined to remove the ICJP as guarantors of a deal when, if he was indeed interested in a deal, he would be keen to keep them in place. So why was he so hostile to a deal? Rusty Nail's quotations, etc., above suggests that he wanted to press a hardline negotiating stance. Something firmer is needed to clarify what Adams was up to.

For example, a letter in the Irish News (18/6/09) from ex-blanketman Joe McNulty quoted a communication first quoted in David Beresford's book Ten Dead Men from Bik (Brendan McFarlane), Maze leader, to Brownie (Gerry Adams).

"The climate now is ripe to make significant progress and establish a firm base down there (free state) which is a necessity for future development and success in the final analysis. To allow opportunities to slip by (opportunities which may not present themselves again) would be a grave mistake."

This seems to suggest that Brownie and sadly Bik McFarland were playing politics with hunger striker lives.
