Higgins gets with de Brún in ‘sticky stuff on the ground’

Thu 25 June 2009, 11:29pm

While reading on the election of German MEP Lothar Bisky as new President of the GUE/NGL group in the European Parliament, he replaces the retiring Francis Wurtz, I happened to look at the group’s MEP page. I was surprised, as I hadn’t heard about it but now realise it was mentioned in the Irish Times, but delighted to see Socialist Party MEP Joe Higgins has joined Sinn Féin in that group.

ADDS: I assume SF have recommitted to GUE/NGL despite the speculation after an approach from the EFA if Bairbre is relisted as one of their MEPs too.

Sinn Féin are committed to making a real difference for the least well off in Irish society, those strugggling financially to make ends meet. As such Sinn Féin MEPs will work together with all others who share this agenda, including Joe Higgins.

Their group has goals of social justice, equality and human rights, all done through peace, something Sinn Fein must find difficult to swallow. Clearly there must be money in this for the Shinners.

This is no suprise really. Despite the difficult relationship the GUE/NGL has had with SF, the hard cash reality is that allowing Bairbre de Brun to continue her membership of the group provides its with an additional nationality.

John maybe the former MEP for the six counties wasn’t beyond a bomb making after all.

There’s nothing like the malice of a military firm scorned, aided and abetted by a civil service not too fond of Nationalist icons.
