Polling figures station by station…
Okay, here’s an idea. During European elections the individual polling stations put up their turn out figures at 12 noon, 5pm and 9pm. The idea here is that people report back the figures they see at their local stations and any others they may have visited. Please make sure you are certain of the figures… I will open another thread for discussion of these figures so that we can use this one purely as a data dump! So no comments please, just your numbers!

we are now officially in election purdah
Crumlin boxes at 9pm. SF Cllr didn’t answer their phone so I had to walk up and back – apologies for the delay but based on activity at the polling station I can’t see the 9pm figures moving by more than 5%. Really low turnout here.
306/796 = 38%
409/1154 = 35%
336/844 = 40%
312/876 = 36%
Harmony Hill 9pm tallies looking like 205/237/289/372 – the Trimbles forgot to bring a calculator, but it’s about 35-37%ish at 9pm.

Impression from the 15 or so polling stations I’ve popped into today was that West Belfast seemed to be slightly busier than South Belfast/Lisburn and a lot busier than East Belfast.
Will be interesting to see if there’s a higher rural vote – where Europe is a day to day issue – or whether it’s the same sluggish turnout or worse.
Stranmillis Road comes in at 34% turn out at 9pm. compared to the overall south belfast 2004 turnout of 49%

36% at Cullen, final total…

They were meant to have them stuck up on the wall. When I arrived after 9.30pm the Presiding Officer already had them in sealed envelopes but went round all four desks, opened them again and gave me the 9pm figures. Seems like a failing in Derrygonnelly.

Some strays from the day:
Malvern Lower Shankill had a respectable 19 at 5…
Divis Community Centre was polling 40% at 8.30…
Not enough data to work out differentials… but I am hoping some of the hard core will be getting back later this evening…
Numbers still being crunched, but the first estimate we have is First estimates saying turnout in Northern Ireland is about 36%… down from 51.7 in 2004…
I visited Boxes 22 – 30 and 35 – 40 in East Belfast
The two Short Strand boxes had voted best at 47% by 9pm. The boxes strongly favour SF.
The loyalist heartland areas were all below 30%. Striving areas were in around 33%
The more leafy glade Ballyhackamore boxes had generally voted at about 40%. These boxes tend to favour Alliance.
Overall East Belfast looks to have voted below 40%.

pl: there is no such thing as tactical voting in a PR election if you transfer down the paper. To maximize the chance of keeping the unionists out, transfer to every candidate who is not a unionist. Although “keeping unionists out” is a pretty crap (and somewhat sectarian) objective to have, they do comprise somewhere between 50%-60% of the voters.

Rathcoole is consistently bad at turning out. I’m pleased about the results in Whiteabbey Primary as we worked these streets with Ian Parsley on the night before the poll.
Sammy Morse has a long night ahead number crunching, but he tells me that the picture to begin with appears to be of lower turnout among unionists, and with Sinn Fein having gotten their vote out.

Sorry, just to clarify that. Sinn Fein have “just about” gotten their vote out. It’s not looking anything like the turnout density they have achieved in the past, but likely better than all the other parties.

In general, in Belfast, SDLP and Alliance strongholds have tended to have the highest turnouts. Strong Alliance areas turning out best also in E Antrim and N Down, but turnout in both those constituencies is characteristically poor. SF don’t seem to have the same differential turnout in Belfast they would normally expect.
40% and 41% in the Markets boxes.
Is this the lowest ever?
A mere 4% dividing the Markets and the Donegall Road is good news for the DUP.
Largymore, Lisburn South. 21:00hrs Electorate 4,600 turnout 35% Highest turnout in Lisburn south.
Sammy
How do you think the result will shake down, based on the figures you have got?
New Lodge averaging 38.5% and Ardoyne 40.5% is uncharacteristically weak, although I’ll qualify that by saying they were the only two polling stations of 11 I visited in the last hour and half with significant activity (Ardoyne managed a traffic jam on Herbert Street!)
What do you think the result will look like?
Tell me about the f*^king golf shoes!
4 boxes at Ballyoran PS in the nationalist area of Portadown had around a 40% turnout according to one of the electoral officials.
For the record, I was given the WRONG information at the desk at Whiteabbey primary. I was told to arrange the candidates from 1 to 7 in order of preference. I knew better but many may not.
Belmont Nursery School, Derry city at close of poll
Turnout 52% + postal votes
Small but not unrepresentative polling station for Derry’s west bank. Overall turnout down significantly. Big grey vote turnout but less younger vote, favouring SDLP.
52% in St. Pauls at Beechmount Avenue. Sinn Fein reporting that this was the best turnout in the west of the city.

jeep55,
are the Saints (ST) Nats and the other Unionists?
For the record, I was given the WRONG information at the desk at Whiteabbey primary. I was told to arrange the candidates from 1 to 7 in order of preference. I knew better but many may not.

Fathom Ward (South Armagh/part of Newry) – estimate of 50% turnout.
Sammy
Not quite sure what the ST means! The SS stands for Short Strand – so boxes 27 and 28 are 100% Nationalist. Boxes 25/26 and 29/30 are practically 100% Unionist. All others are mainly Unionist but some of the Dundela and particularly St Joseph’s boxes have a moderate middle class Catholic vote which tends to favour SDLP and Alliance. In a very small way I am picking up the same trends that Sammy Morse is getting from the North Belfast figures.
Slugger/Sammy Morse gets dissed by Beeb.
“Some anecdotal accounts suggest weaker polling in unionist and working class areas. “
jeep55,
thanks for that ST as in Saint St Josephs/St Matthews – should have put St.
I voted at 8.50pm in Ashgrove Primary ( Glengormley, St Antrim) and my next door neighbour, who was acting as Poll Clerk said that there had been a total of about 500 votes in the two boxes, and normally there would be twice that at that stage. She has been doing it for years and said she had never seen it so slow at all
Were there council elections at the same time too, last time around?
All the info you need here, no local elections at the same time they were 2005.
