Election leaflets review thread

Sat 30 May 2009, 2:06am

I’ve received election leaflets from everyone but Jim Nicholson. Jim Allister alone sent through two distinct pieces for my consideration.

Time for a thread on the leaflets (I’ll add a view of Nicholson’s once it drops through my letterbox)

Agnew: small and glossy. It tells me it is both recycled and carbon neutral. Big photo of a young man on one side but with a strange wide, white outline. Other side is the policy stuff and there ain’t a lot. Good direction to online presence.

Allister: he sent me two; both medium size and glossy and they are both based on his strap line ‘Experience, Principle, Integrity’. While he has a good go at the DUP and SF in both he also has a strong focus on his European record. Very hard to find direction to online material.

de Brún: small leaflet, matt. Very little detail and it is split between English and Irish. Direction to a website pretty visible.

Dodds: biggest unfolded leaflet, glossy. Big focus on being No.1 and very little consideration of Europe. Direction to online content but doesn’t stand out.

(continues below the fold)

Maginness: once unfolded the biggest leaflet, glossy. Simple message on the cover, the strap line ‘When we win, You win’. Split between ‘normal’ people endorsement and European policy. Many languages on back. Carbon neutral. Good direction to online content.

Parsley: small and glossy. Blue and Yellow. Small text. Little focus on Europe until the back page. No direction to online content.

If I was a swing voter Maginness and Allister would be ahead for me. Parsley’s was by far the worst with de Brún and Agnew following close behind for their lack of any content. What did you think?

Though in all honesty éirígí’s ‘Stop the Difference’ leaflet (pdf) hits my spot more than all of the above.

I have only received 2 leaflets via post and one by canvass: TUV with the junk mail, CU individually addressed, CU canvass leaflet (it’s different).

Do none of the other parties love my postcode or does my postman refuse the rest?

OK – my take on this. I got Barbie’s leaflet through today – and well, it looks like most of the cash is being spent trying to hold Mary Lou’s seat. This evening, I got a bigger SF leaflet through the door – it was larger and vacuous – the bit about building a united Ireland was about motorways, and job creation- ??

Overall SF’s it was about level with Alliance’s at the bottom of the league. Alliance should have done better after a half decent PEB. Jim Allister’s leaflet was by far the best, but SDLP at least reaching out to new migrants. The DUP’s was also very poor. I only kept the SDLP and TUV’s for more that 5 minutes..

  7. Junior Apparatchik says:

    See it totally differently.

Alliance’s was the best for me because it actually mentions a bit about the candidate we’re electing.

Which is, after all, Alliance’s strength at this election – they have by far the most able and competent candidate, which is what this should all be about.

I liked SF’s too – with all the utter nonsense coming from the other parties, they may well get my second pref on the same basis.

    found the difference!
Mark Durkan looks normal, although the reality is…

Oh and hasnt David Ford great teeth!

not sure if Colin Duffey would look all that different, but hes not in eirge anyways,

think they would need a woman or an ethnic minority to win that one, although if Naomi were to oust david… ummm

“Though in all honesty éirígí‘s ‘Stop the Difference’ leaflet (pdf) hits my spot more than all of the above.”

‘Stop’ the Difference Mark??? You know Freud said there was no such thing as an simple accident?

Thought Bab’s leaflet was poor and the layout distracting. Anyone less then confident/lazy about the Irish Language – like myself – would skip over the Gaeilge and as a result, miss a chunk of the text in English. Would have expected it as a Compliment slip or a ‘sorry I missed you’ card but not a leaflet in it’s own right.

Parsley’s while lacking in imagination at least spoke of the candidate as well as the issues.

Allistar’s was great craic, creepy picture and all but obviously aimed at a particular group within a group.

The DUP’s was similarly great craic but only for the picture of Diane standing around ten feet in front of the other grandees of the DUP. Perspective is a wonderful help in photographs (“No Dougal, these cows are very small, those are far away”)

The Greens and the SDLP are both at least recognising the ‘facts on the ground’ of current day NI – trying new forms of communication and targeting (remember, I said current day NI) the new communities.

Got Nicholson’s this morning. It was pretty good, like the way it was addressed rather than delivered like junk mail. Bit Englishy but very different from other Unionists ones and issue focused. Probably the best.

Also got SF’s big leaflet when canvassed today. a lot better than the postal one. Like the texting option to join the team. (btw: did it really need three SF canvassers including Spike at my door when they would be sure there wasn’t a chance of a vote?)

    drumlins rock,

didn’t ask for a cigarette, I’ve drunkly fallen asleep with my head in the lap of the lead canvassers (not Spike) and I know he smokes so it wouldn’t have been a fair factor. Plus Sf’s research should have been good enough that a fag was offered.

    Gari,

I prefer to think Spike was shitting himself about calling on his own so called for backup ;0)

    **** Spot the Difference ****

    Answer

    C) Adams because he’s the only one who was unemployed before getting elected

    D) Robinson because he’s the only one who stood trial in a forign country

    E) Adams because he’s the only one who can’t speak Irish

    F) Empey because Sir Reg is the only knighted one

    G) Robinson because he’s the only one wearing contacts

    H) Durkan because he’s the only one who has never worn a berry

    I) Adams because he’s the only one who left school with absolutely no qualifications at all

Couldn’t help note the irony in this BBC report.
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/northern_ireland/8073845.stm

“Who would win in a fight between the IRA and the Taliban?

“The makers of an American television show have created a computer simulator to provide the answer to a question no-one was asking, outside of a school playground or in a pub after a few too many drinks.

“Deadliest Warrior pitches hypothetical fights between historical figures, assessing the strengths and weaknesses of factors such as weaponry and tactics, like a hi-tech version of playground card game Top Trumps.

“The analysis is used to create a computer model where the battle plays out to the death.

“It is broadcast by Spike, a cable channel owned by MTV aimed at “young adult males”, and the pitch for Sunday’s programme is suitably dramatic.”

I suppose that after being reduced to canvassing out in the countryside, he had to look at other options.!!!!!!!!!
