Until now we have largely operated a low threshold for participation in the debates on Slugger. But after a fairly focused and unprovoked attack by one commenter this afternoon on a single public figure we have decided to reserve the capacity to comment to those who register with Slugger. We’ll keep this policy under constant review; but for now the only way to comment is to ‘join’ Slugger.

Disappointed Mick has had to go to these lengths but hardly unsurprising given someone seems to have deliberately used the comments to present a serious and ridiculous libel under a false identity. I’m sure they are almost happy with the outcome but I suspect they were working to have the site shut. Wonder why they chose a thread discussing an article by Declan Kearney to launch their close the site initiative?
Maybe it was simply a very dirty attack on the individual rather than an attempt to attack the site.
That depends on who notified the libelled party. If it was the libeller, then attack on the site rather than an attack on that party is more probable. At any rate, the libelled party should check his email header for the IP address of the sender, and compare it to the IP address for the poster (assuming he/she was notified by email.

The libelled party may have read the item as a matter of course. perhaps it was posted on a thread which the libelled party was liable to look at. Perhaps the libeller didn’t care whether the other person saw it or not and wanted to blacken that person in the eyes of others.All we know is that it seems to have been a rotten piece of posting which caused serious offence and had to be removed.
