Conversation, politics and stray insights

“Both sides, all sides, have become tied up in intricate micropolitical struggles.”

Tue 13 January 2009, 4:31am

Following on from the weekend demonstrations, and after having an emergency motion bid rejected by the Speaker, Sinn Féin’s Gerry Adams and the DUP’s Nelson McCausland, having traded barbs previously within the Assembly, engaged in some arguably displacement behaviour in the Stormont Live studio over Gaza and Israel. Although Adams’ claim not to be “anti-Israeli” is somewhat undermined by the statements by his party colleagues – and their youth wing. But, with agreement elsewhere, there are other interpretations, in the continuing discussion, of what is happening in the Middle East worth noting..

Driftwood-I was thinking the same thought. They look very alike.

    But…in the 1970s:

One twin went to Oxford University and read history.

The other went to Oxford Street and made history

If Gerry Adams isn’t anti-Israel, he should be. Those gangsters in Tel Aviv are nothing but a bunch of baby killers and war criminals.

  6. USA says:

Again from an international perspective Adams appears very reasonable while the DUP representatives come across as right wing hawks bent on war and destruction.
McCausland prattled on and when he felt he may get creative he reverted to task like a drone and finished with the old reliable about not taking lectures from SF.
Adams was a little cock sure with the “i’ve been there” line which he unfortunately repeated twice, but his position is the correct one.
Also agree that the timing is cynical and related to upcoming political events in US and Isreal. The Katusha rockets were merely the excuse de jour for Isreal.

I’m not sure any nation would accept constant rocket attacks. You have to ask WHY hamas took this course of action – what did they expect?

I’d say that Nelson is MEP material. He is capable of engaging in debate with those with whom he disagrees violently, without getting all hot and bothered. Which is surely what the DUP are looking for as they weigh up the Allister factor.

these polemic oppinions reflect an immaturity of insight in NI and more reasoned voices shoud be interviewed as well lets look at this in a balanced way a mesured response is not killing 900 people in place of 7 and hamas have to acknowledge israel right to exist.
Adams is clueless about world affairs as mc dowell showed in debate . I find it strange ex nf member Nelson mc causland ( deniers of the holocaust or the numbers ) is now a friend of Israel he and donaldon are a memeber of a party led by Paisley whose wife held one of the most anti semitic campaigns in history against her jewish o neillite opponenet in 1969 perhaps and his friend jeffrey could get the big doc to apologise . a more cynical person could say this is a ploy to win friends on the american right
