The press release as spam?

Thu 4 December 2008, 6:37pm

Cathal Boylan MLA (SF) has a public service press release advising people of a postal and telephone scam currently in operation.

‘Basically, people are receiving post cards through their letter box from a company called PDS, (Parcel Delivery Service), stating they were unable to deliver a parcel.

They are informed they need to contact a number, 0906 6611 911, to arrange delivery or collection.

This is a premium rate number, if you call it and start to hear a recorded message, you will already have been billed £15.00.’

Which is a tad strange considering this scam was shut down in 2005.

I can’t understand why anyone would go to the trouble of distributing the cards for a scam that can’t work. Did they? Or has Cathal just put the contents of a spam email out as a press release?

I’m sure most of the press releases sent out by Sinn Féin every day can be counted as ‘junk mail’.

I recieved several e mails – most from Armagh Council – in relation to this scam. I believe it originated in the NIHE – therefore if legitimate concerns were raised it is in the public interest to pass those concerns on – it would be worse if Mr. Boylan was informed and said nothing and some one was ripped off. By the way have you tried the number yourself to verify there is nothing to worry about??
