“It’s an ongoing process..”

Mon 17 November 2008, 2:24am

Also from today’s Politics Show. Ulster Unionist Party leader Reg Empey seemed better prepared, than on Tuesday’s Stormont Live, to answer the question about “where stands things” with the UUP/Conservatives “electoral pact”, while the DUP’s Jeffrey Donaldson did his best to introduce troublesome talking points for his former party [and its leader - Ed].

Has Sir Reg got the bottle to make it all happen? He appeared more positive than in previous interviews. But he must realise that it’s either a full merger or nothing. Also, a new agreed candidate would be needed for Europe – I don’t think Jim Nicholson would be acceptable to the Conservative Party and it would be a good opportunity to test the level of support for a Conservative candidate.

I think Reg hit the Donaldson ball out of the park, the real decisions are taken at Westminister not in Stormont regarding taxation and the amount available for public spending, Stormont is only a talking shop in these areas.

Donaldson’s comments confirmed that the DUP are a parochial Ulster Nationalist party who are quaking in their ministerial Skodas at the thought of a UUP/Tory link up.

If the DUP are so concerned about maximising seats they can stand down and let a new UUP/Tory candidate who can attract support across the divide win the seat – will they? No chance they would prefer SF to fill the seat first.

Nicholson would be the joint candidate as he is the sitting member and is already well known.

Jeffrey is talking bumpkum (to be translated into the vernacular as s*ite.) Firstly the conservatives DO deal with everyday issues much more so than the DUP could ever do. They’re a British mainland party and destined to win the next general election. Especially when job losses begin to bite, and gordos policy of spending does damage to the pound. Jeffrey also fails to realise that Reg recognises the DUP are based on a Dublin/Belfast axis, where as the Conservatives are not, they’re ‘national’ and wasn’t it always the conservative and unionist party.

Wee jef was all over the place, not once did the DUP man talk about bread and butter issues. He wants a unionist pact based as reg says on a dublin/belfast axis rather than a british national party. So much for unionism being safe in their hands.

    The dupers are afraid :)

I’d say that was a score draw between Sir Reg and Jeffrey. Both made the points they needed to make without going for the jugular. Reg did well in the sense of calming things down, issue dropping and doing the nice ‘national context’. Jeffrey was hinting that independence at Westminister could gain the greatest leverage and that David Trimble appeared to be setting the UUP agenda as opposed to Reg.

  8. frustrated democrat says:

Trimble is a member of the Tories, Empey of the UUP – Trimble spoke for the Tories not the UUP. If there is a no link up the Tories will fight all 18 seats. If there is a link up then it would be the C&U;party who would decide what they would do.

This blog is fast becoming a joke with all the nonsense threads being submitted. Not to mention the constant photos of award winners.

Can anyone here say ENOUGH ALREADY.

Was largely a score draw but Reg came over as calm and collected while there was a negative hysterical tone from Jeffrey

Good performance by Reg. He has an air of confidence about him. Really getting into his stride on the ‘national dimension’ to politics.
Think Jeffrey Donaldson played a ‘little Ulster’ card that he doesnt even believe in himself – he knows how important Westminster is.

The Poisoned Dwarf is proving himself the thickest cretin the Dup pack.Slug is meanwhile moving up the class. Both are totally incapable of moving out of their petty insular Little Ulster prams. I know the Dwarf invented sex and now he has applied his pea sized brain to the economy whilst still wanting to play arithmetic with a box of gerrymandered numerals selected from the box on a sectarian head count. What an ante deluvian attitude he should learn more about the British Humanist Association and secular politics as he stands the risk of becoming the butt of humour in the House. He might hopefully get his jam supplier changed as Golliwogs are becoming non pc amongst his own consumers. You never know he might have to take up ultra bitter orange marmalade jelly instead of strawberry jam. Or he could jump onto the label and get permantly stuck on the jam jar.
