IT was probably inevitable that in a society as broken as this one, that someone would attempt to politicise Eoghan Quigg, the 16-year-old Dungiven boy on X Factor. First, the News Letter stepped up to the mark with its story on ill-informed unionist complaints that Eoghan didn’t attend an armed forces rehab centre with other contestants (he had other commitments). Then, when Eoghan wore a poppy and sang along with the others on the massive single Hero, which is raising money for veterans and is currently topping the charts, out pops some diehard republican killjoy with sinister comments about how this could be a problem for Eoghan and his family. By Sunday, a banner was being carried at the Army’s homecoming parade declaring that Eoghan supported the troops. Presumably the implication was that if a Dungiven lad can then others should too. All rather tragic, putting pressure on a kid just who’s living his dream. Perhaps it was a mistake for the X Factor to choose the cause it did, but the victimising or ‘claiming’ of this talented teenager by the two tribes is both pathetic and sad.
Pathetic is the most apropriate word there. The young fella was only about 2 when the first ceasfire was called … what does he know? I was at the protest on Sunday against the RIR march in Belfast but for God sake Eoin has a fantastic talent and is so lucky to be given this opportunity. Leave the kid alone!!!!!!
I hope we can all agree on this. I totally agree with Belfast Gonzos post (apart from the terrible headline !).
Eoghan seems like a really great guy and his parents are rightly proud. I think he and his family have acted with infinitely more maturity than the groups that are criticising him/them.

If Eoghan wishes to wear a poppy, or sing for that charity, or even (as highly unlikely as it is) join the army himself, whose business is it? The boy is in all likelihood from a Republican background, (Catholic, Protestant and Dissenter).
The boy is the first signs of youth which has grown up with no troubles. He’s behaving as a product of his times, all the time and investment in bringing this place to peace – he’s the product.
That he decides that the cause of his background comes second to the cause of making money for himself and his family, fantastic and just right. As the man said, you can’t eat a flag.
As an afterthought, I wonder if the person behind this threat had been handed an opportunity to make millions of pounds when they were sweet sixteen, would their political beliefs have prevented the from doing so? Would it fuck.

I think that all people with an IQ over 17 will condemn the attacks from ‘dissident republicans’ on this.
I would have expected more from the Newsletter, they have a unionist agenda but one would expect that they could have avoiding politically exploiting a child.

Are you suggesting Irish republicans are the nly ones in Britian who are uncormfortable with the glorification with the war in Iraq? I would suggest there is a significant body of opposition in England including different anti-war groups and of course a muslim population who may also feel uncormfortable.

I think you mistake a charity that looks after the interests of Physically and mentally Injured Kids (and lets face it, thats what most of them are) for one that promotes the Iraq and/or Afghanistan conflicts.
I would suggest to you that, Irish republican bigots aside, The majority of those who are against the war, are still in favour of ‘our boys’ a being given proper treatment. the only misgining being that its payed for by charities and not the government

This has been a bit of a disaster for RSF national publicity director Richard Walsh, or “RSF mouthpiece Richard Walsh”, as the front page of the Sunday Life described him (complete with photograph).

Shades40, yes. The tops had the name of INLA hunger striker Kevin Lynch, after whom a Dungiven hurling club is named, on one of the emblems.
A complaint was made, ITV contacted the family and they agreed not to wear the shirt again. And they didn’t. The family had nothing to do with designing the shirt. The only connection was that Eoghan plays for the KLHC.

I drove through Dungiven recently – Eoghan posters are everywhere – including flags from cars.
He’ll not win though – his voice is too weak.
Ditto – I also had the pleasure of recently passing through Dungiven. I have to say I found the sight of the town draped in 10ft high posters of Eohgan slightly bizarre. Passing tourists must think they’ve wandered into some new version of the Wicker Man.

For the record, I had said that X Factor were to blame for their cynical use of an Irish contestant. It was not young Quigg who I said was primarily to blame for this sick escapade on the part of X Factor.
