“Everybody in this community has been up in arms about the level of crime..”

Thu 30 October 2008, 3:46pm

In Londonderry two armed masked men walked into a bookmakers last night, ordered the customers to lie on the floor before shooting one of them in both legs. Meanwhile, as the IRSP and the 32 County Sovereignty Group huddle closer together, in Belfast Community Restorative Justice Ireland director, Jim Auld, has said that three members of the scheme have been threatened by dissenting republican groups. Looks like the accreditation of those schemes might not be working out as planned.. Or, as a Belfast Telegraph report put it in August, “the bid to exert control in nationalist areas in particular is continuing unabated.” [Isn't the sight of those "well-known Republicans" a sufficient deterrent anymore? - Ed] There’s always the draft five year strategy..

I hope all witnesses contact the Police and provide them with any information they have. Then the PSNI can kick-start their investigation by phoning up a random local and asking them to visit a potential crime scene in darkness and verify the man’s injuries.

What really struck me on this story was the mural on the wall.

God bless them and no disrespect to them, but who are the two martyrs on the wall of the bookies?

Just imagine. Over 35 years of murder and mayhem, 3500 dead, countless injured, the Hunger Strikes and then these two end up as a mural on the wall of a branch of Ladbrokes in Derry. Still, I am sure that the local intelligensia are suitably impressed as they wander in to place their bets and are confident that the sacrifice was worth it.

One more step to a United Ireland – via the 2.30 at the Curragh.

That story about the IRPS and the 32CSM huddling together mentions a third un-named dissident group. Anyone know who they might be?

“Everybody in this community has been up in arms…”
    Is that legal?
If they wore poppies would that be better or worse?
Do the multitude of ‘groups’ ever collide as they rush to the scene of the latest incident to deliver a comment?
And there was me thinking that these wonderful groups, community watch, restorative justice and so on, had basically solved all problems and left no room or need for ‘crown forces’ in our wee pravince.
Ah dear me, that such things can happen with living saints such as Martin, Martina and Mitchell (A.K.A THE 3 Ms) on earth.

Where is Mitchell. I always found him entertaining and relatively straightforward but he seems to have dropped out of sight. In true Stalinist tradition has he been defined as a non-person in SF or is it just me?
