“Brian Cowen is a lucky leader..”

Sun 28 September 2008, 8:23pm

The BBC NI Politics Show unveiled a new feature today, a monthly report from their Dublin correspondent Shane Harrison. In the first instalment he outlines the likely impact of the credit crunch on a Republic of Ireland economy in recession and argues that, despite all the problems, compared to Gordon Brown, Taoiseach Brian Cowen is a “lucky leader” – it probably helps that TDs have other priorities..

Napoleon was once famously heard to remark that he did’nt care whether his Generals were tall or short , fat or thin , brave or cowardly , the main requirement was that they be ‘lucky’

Lady Fortuna is of notorious mien and her affections cannot never be relied on.

Gordon Brown & Peter Robinson are learning that said lady has upped and removed herself from her Brittanic majesty’s shores .

Mr Cowan has noted strange gloomy clouds arriving from the west . He remembers seeing something similar during visit to Wall St a few months back :(

    Wonder what it is ;)

Will he become a third victim of the ‘too long leader in waiting syndrome ‘ ?

    Who knows .

Whatever – but yer man Harrison needs to get rid of the pink sweater- ghastly ;)

Don’t know about lucky but Cowen certainly has more time than Brown to sort things.

There’s the Pension Reserve to dip into if there’s an emergency, Ireland has no national debt and most interestingly in my view, Ireland’s credit card debt is dropping (two months in a row now) while the UK’s doubled last month as people used their cards to pay mortgages and such.

The Wall St ‘bail out’ will be only a temporary fix . There’s worse to come 2009/2010.

President Obama is going to have a tough time pulling rabbits from a hat.

They’ve not only thrown a life line to the Wall St gangsters they appear to have given them the boat as well so they can sail away :(

I have to say I’m really not sure what this piece is all about from the BBC.

If we’re to have analysis of the Republic’s political system, it’d be good to invite some other people to share it with us, and how it relates to matters North of the border.
