THE Home Office published the draft Immigration and Citizenship Bill on Monday. Buried in an accompanying publication Making Change Stick is this comment on the Common Travel Area: “The principle of movement without controls regardless of nationality in the area is out of date.” It adds that results of a review will be made shortly, and there will be consultation before legislation is passed. Could Sammy Wilson’s nightmare be coming true? Or does Gordon still owe him something for that vote?
The UK has always been recognized, rightly so, as one of the world’s counties with an open welcoming tradition. Sadly, it now seems to be a victim of paranoia and is becoming quite repressive.
Meanwhile, according to a new report, the Home Office is funding systematic abuse of asylum seekers by private security companies who are both running the UK’s ‘detention estate’ and deportations and removals. More on this at Belfast and Beyond, including about forced removal from Northern Ireland.
