Ahern’s ‘pitch’ pays off

Mon 14 July 2008, 3:07pm

There had been some speculation about what former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern would do next, after his “pitch for a future international role” before a joint session of the US Congress in April. RTÉ reports that he has been appointed to the World Economic Forum’s Council on Negotiation and Conflict Resolution – one of the Forum’s network of global agenda councils. Other members of the council mentioned in the RTÉ report include former US President Jimmy Carter, George Mitchell and the former president of Finland, Martti Ahtisaari. There’s not much information about the council on the Forum’s website so far, but they have been consulting.

Well, he’s still a young man and, irrespective of his temporary insanity earlier this year, his undoubted talents should be put to use.

    Good idea.

After if he doesnt have a house in Ireland or a bank account he’s very flexible in where he can quickly relocate to.

  3. I suppose it beats working. Apparently he’s currently being paid a pension of €200,000 per year as a result of his recent dethronement. Unfortunately for him, he had to take a €20,000 cut in his pension due to the decision by the government to forego the pay increase they had awarded themselves, upon the recommendation of the ‘expert group’.

I have no wish to see our former Taoiseach in penury – but I think it’s rich that he’s being paid a pension while still at work.

Perhaps that’s another saving that could be looked at…

Just a note – the name of the former Finnish president is Martti Ahtisaari (not Marti Atasari).

    Thanks kuraaka.

    It’s now edited appropriately.

And someone should mention it to RTÉ.
