Active Retirement

Fri 4 July 2008, 3:41pm

Dr. Paisley seems to be rather busy at the moment. He has started his new column in the Newsletter. The first missive uses the acronym PORRIDGE. He appears to be promising to be opinionated and reactionary but we will have to wait and see the substance of what he says. In addition (though I cannot get it online) the Newsletter is reporting that Paisley will as usual addresses the annual rally at The Diamond on Sunday though he seems likely to face a protest.

“Do the loyal folk do anything other”…are you for real? The words POT, KETTLE and BLACK spring to mind. People like Brendan McKenna (Garvaghy Road) and Gerard Rice (Lower Ormeau) have made a career out of protesting against peaceful marches down the Queen’s Highway. At least, unlike McKenna and his cronies on the Garvaghy Road, these protestors won’t resort to violence. I’m not saying I agree with these people though, I think they’re backward-thinking Protestant fundamentalists who are a throwback to “bygone years”. I also believe they have nothing to offer the P.U.L. community and need to move on with their lives and accept the current political climate of peace by compromise. However, I still respect their right to peaceful protest, as should G.O.F.

Papa Doc’s changed with the times, as should you. You need to take a good hard look at yourself. Do you really believe your narrow-minded prejudice against the man is still warranted?

“Papa Doc” changed 30 years and 3,000 lives too late. He damned many a decent Unionist leader who had the courage to talk and try to “change with the times” before ending up with a worse deal than any of those he dismissed as lundies and sell-out merchants.

Given the speed at which the old donkey has been racing away from traditional unionism, we might soon be calling for someone a bit more hardline like David Ford. (Or even our own IJP.)

Good luck to the protesters at the Diamond this Sunday night. I wonder if Papa Croc will be bringing his new Army Council buddy along?

Poor wee Peter isn’t going to be left to run the country unchecked.

Now, lets have a quiz – who do we think will write the articles?

    multiple choice

    DUP press office – unlikely,
Former UUP now DUP advisors? – definitely not
    Ian Paisley snr – unlikely,
Ian Paisley jnr – could beeee!

Boy will this be good to watch!!

In wishing the protestors “good luck” perhaps you could tell us how you would define success or otherwise for them? Disrupting an open air gospel service? Wonder what Stephen Dickinson (who apparently hates chinese dancing) thinks of that…….

    Watchman,

As most of the protestors will be former DUP serial protestors, they will know well what success looks like; sure didn’t Dr Paisley train them at numerous Presbyterian Assemblies and other such protests over the years.

I’m sure as Dr Paisley looks down on his protesting Prodigies, he will have a wee tear in his eye, wishing he was down there with them.

    Ahhh, but they were Taigs, thus less than equal. I actually thought this was the more outrageous;

    >>At least, unlike McKenna and his cronies on the Garvaghy Road, these protestors won’t resort to violence.<,

Sure Nationalists getting beaten off of their own streets to accommodate triumphalists like Paisley and whatshisname, equates to all the violence at Drumcree and subsequent murders. God rest those young boys and the others who died for those who don’t resort to violence in the world of the confused Loyalist.

  21. Billy says:

    Concerned Loyalist

“against peaceful marches down the Queen’s Highway”

These marches through predominantly Catholic areas were peaceful because the wishes of the residents were totally ignored and they were penned into their streets like animals.

Do you think there might be the odd howl of “loyalist” protest if a Republican march wanted to go through a predominantly Protestant area?

If + when the OO take clear firm action against those lodges who annually use banners and or bands commemorating “loyalist” terrorists, then people may not see them as hypocrites.

I can’t imagine why people on the Ormeau Road would protest against the OO. These “peaceful” people stopped their parade outside the shop where innocents Catholics were murdered and deliberately upped the volume of their music.

Then, of course, we had the famous OO member making the 5 gesture to indicate the 5 innocent Catholics who were murdered – has he been expelled or disciplined at all?

At Drumcree, we had the OO openly working with Billy Wright, Adair etc. Then, of course, we had the murder of the Quinn children and the widespread rioting, looting across the North which the OO didn’t openly condemn.

I seem to remember a very senior OO member openly condoning the rioting and shooting at police that occurred on the Whiterock.

    “Peaceful” people indeed.

The OO are only peaceful if they get to march where they want when they want.

Contrary to the Unionist misconception (or stupidity), there is no right to march the “Queen’s Highway” whenever you want. All marches in GB + in the North are subject to constraints from the local authorities, police etc.

The KKK or BNP would not be allowed to march through predominantly coloured or Jewish neighbourhoods.

Despite the pathetic and ineffective denials of OO members/supporters, it is widely (and rightly)perceived as an anti-Catholic Organisation that is (at best) ambiguous to “loyalist” terrorism.

Until the OO are willing to confront these issues (and they have done nothing but talk until now), there will be protests when they want to walk through neighbourhoods where the vast majority of residents don’t want them.
