‘Spotlight’ update

Tue 18 March 2008, 9:09pm

Of the eleven men arrested at the weekend over ongoing investigations into paramilitary activity, the four BBC journalists were released without charge, three other men have been released from custody – that report previous added that files would be sent to the DPP – and the remaining four men will appear at the Republic of Ireland’s Special Criminal Court later today. Adds From a short Irish Times report

All four men have addresses in Derry city in Northern Ireland. They are Gary Donnelly (38), Kildrum Gardens, Michael Gallagher (28), Sackville Court, Martin Francis O’Neill (date of birth unknown), Colmcille Court, and Patrick John McDaid (39), Marlborough St. They were charged with membership of an unlawful organisation styling itself the Irish Republican Army, otherwise Óglaigh na hÉireann, otherwise the IRA, on Sunday last, March 16th.

And, in the comments zone, jone suggests some of those names may be familiar..

No he didn’t as yourself and SF were doing a great job there. Paul wasn’t a Republican so he doesn’t count right?

As regards the man you mention:
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/northern_ireland/7303671.stm

Its outrageous. But its happening everywhere, in Dublin, all over the UK.
    Total breakdown in respect.

I think peteb tends to let Chris Donnelly do posts when Republicans are killed, and restricts himself to posts which embarrass SF.
    Just accept it.

At any rate I’m told we’re supposed to ignore the agendas of the blogging-team, and deal with the thread.

I find it virtually impossible, so you have my support and understanding; but you won’t get anywhere with this line of attack, except maybe a yellow card from Mick.

Though the thread is still entitled “So he would be very well known..”. At least Pete is consistent, retaining the focus on of suspicion on the victim and his community, rather than the actual perpetrators.

although I don’t condone the way peteb has presented the other thread, hinting that the victim is responsible or deserving of his fate, as some have suggested.
I can’t help but observe how these voices never once raised an objection to conor murphy’s blackening of paul quinn.
And looking back twinbrook over the threads your silence spoke volumes. all you said was to attack SDLP, for darinf to raise the subject.

    So I just think:

    Dec,
    one thing I’ve noticed is this;
When a Republican is murdered, there’s an immediate suspect in custody.
When Paul Quinn or Robert McCartney is murdered, no arrests ( for months ); wonder why that is?

Well, on this occasion one of the suspects handed himself in. Which was handy as the PSNI declined to arrest him near the scene of the crime despite being identified by locals. That being said, I feel to see the relevance of your straw-clutching and whataboutery.

  21. perci says:

    well the relevance is:
    Hierarchy of victims:

Funny how the guy had a change of mind here, sudden attack of conscience perhaps; but in McCartneys case despite 70 people in the bar… nowt
and in quinn’s case despite 10/15 men in boiler suits.. nowt.
    What I’m suggesting is this:

If its a Republican murdered there’s action; perhaps the 20-yr old was told to hand himself in.
    Or get worse.
When the murder is done by Republicans– hush hush and if you say anything you’re a TOUT.

What matters is who you are.
Pure tribalism, nothing more nothing less.

This argument is becoming hysterical: for starters – what “innocent man”?
Nor did PB do any more than speculate that Frank McGreevy’s ordeal might be connected with his past – “justified” is *your* contribution to the ridiculous hyperbole surrounding this witch hunt. Judging by what is now known about the only suspect(s), PB’s speculation is extremely unlikely, but see if you can restrain yourself if Michael Stone is ever beaten to death in his own home.

I think this isn’t the first time you have hinted that PB might be using sock-puppets. However, the Slugger team includes at least one Shinner, and they can detect sock-puppetry by checking IP addresses in the logs. Even if PB was so inclined, he wouldn’t dare.
