Unionism's problem is that they need to find ways to co-operate with nationalists after all the years of refusing to do so. It would be all too easy to gloat but the fact is that on the ground people already knew that it had become unavoidable by the time of the last election and gave the DUP a mandate to do so.

The unionist and especially the loyalist voter has accepted powersharing with the nationalist voter's choice, which is Sinn Fein at the moment. This isn't Belfast Corporation in 1985 when beating up your political opponent was an acceptable way to behave, that policy is as dead as the Orange Order's claim to march wherever it likes. The leadership of the DUP, whichever of them comes out on top, has already accepted the need for a compromise position and knows that the governments have left them with no choice. Sinn Fein made it clear long ago that they could work with anyone in the DUP so that's not a problem.

Only unionists could suggest that being rude to the people one has to deal with daily is a political principle or even a reasonable way to behave. Have the UUP been taken over by a collective deathwish?

Robo will not be challenged. In DUP terms he has grown as Paisley has deflated. The DUP with Robinson as leader will shave another layer off the UUP and will stop the edgy feeling about relationship with SF. One thing for sure - he will not be a chuckle brother.

Hi All,

The Alliance Party have arranged a press conference for Monday morning at 11.30 to announce a defection (from the SDLP as it happens).

Anyone know the name? I’m being told its the chair of a constituency association or district council.

I've heard speculation that a number of journalists think the person who is defecting to Alliance is from the Ulster Unionist Party.

Sinn Fein also said they'd not allow student fees to be raised, yet when the time came to vote a large number of them dissapeared and didn't vote thus allowing their allies in the DUP to have their way.

Shinners are very good at saying one thing then doing another.

Dodds may indeed have enough ego himself to challenge for leadership, but he will fail, hard. Robo is too secure, has a better profile at the moment, and is a much better politician in general.

From my part I actually wish Dodds was a stronger challenger and, sometimes, that Junior wasn't such a greedy stupid pillock, then when the eventual battle for DUP leadership came up the party had a good chance of splitting or atleast fracturing a bit, as is the nature of Unionist parties when they get too big.

"Interesting analysis, Watchman. So convinced is he that he is invincible, that recently Papa Doc has been warning critics within the church that they may suffer divine retribution if they attack “the Lord’s anointed” ie himself."

I'm not surprised to hear that from the old booby. What amazes me is that Paisley is so full of personal egotism (a sin in itself) that he puts himself in a Pope-like position where anyone who challenges him is challenging God's "Anointed One". It's all rubbish of course and Papa Doc is now just a rambling flip-flopper.

"Jim Allister too, inflects a subtle hint that there are people outside the party who might well move into the DUP once the Paisley leadership is gone."

Who do you think this is?

Whilst Robinson is next in line to take-over as soon as the big man steps as side.

I wouldn't rule out Dodds making it become a leadership battle.

Now theres a thought - Paisley a.k.a God as Northern Ireland's manager . With God on their side how could they lose?

I can already see the notice boards on the bethels of Belfast plastered with

' Jesus saves but Paisley scores '

On the evening of 17 November, 2 days after the Anglo-Irish Agreement, Ian Paisley compared Mrs Thatcher to Sennacherib, king of the Assyrians. (As all Sluggerites will know from Bible Class, Sennacherib was king of the Assyrians who tried to attack Jerusalem in the reign of King Hezekiah and whose army was decimated by the Angel of the Lord.) Paisley noted that Hezekiah was slain in the temple of his god by his two sons, and implied that Mrs Thatcher's political fate might be similar. He was uncannily prescient, for that is exactly how the Iron Lady fell. Now, all these years later, I wonder if Papa Doc will be forced out the same way, slain by his political sons.
