Cardinal’s hat to stay in Armagh…
Slugger hears from Will that after a long period of speculation, the Vatican has finally decided to make Archbishop Sean Brady a Cardinal. There had been speculation that Diarmuid Martin, the Archbishop of Dublin, might take the senior position ahead of Brady. Martin has had much closer connections to the Vatican in the past, and there is some speculation that he may return there in a few years time, and pick up a ‘red hat’ there. Ireland currently has two retired Cardinals: Cahal Daly and Martin’s predecessor in Dublin Desmond Connell.

Also on today’s list is Archbishop John Patrick Foley, pro-grand master of the Equestrian Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem.

Good that it’s back in Armagh where it belongs (though Des Connell was personally deserving) once more confirming the primacy of St Patrick’s See.
Archbishop Brady has upped his game in a few areas recently (including the case against the Sexual Orientation Order where he was extensively quoted in the judge’s ruling). Be interesting to see if his influence stretches to getting his favourites promoted – i.e. Donal McKeown as Bishop of Down and Connor.

Dr Brady was born in 1939 at Drumcalpin, near Laragh in County Cavan, and after an early education in the local school he went to St Patrick’s College, Cavan. He then attended St Patrick’s College, Maynooth and the Irish College in Rome. He was ordained in February 1964 and after post-graduate studies in canon law in Rome he returned to teach at St Patrick’s, Cavan, in 1967.
In 1980, he was appointed vice-rector of the Irish College in Rome and became rector in 1987. He remained there until 1993 when he was appointed parish priest of Castletara, Ballyhaise, County Cavan.
In February 1995 he was ordained Coadjutor Archbishop of Armagh and a year and a half later he became Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland October 1996.
