More fragments on that Bulgarian stuff…

Wed 25 July 2007, 10:04pm

Here’s a few more snippets on that Bulgarian lead. It’s not clear that this was contained in the original, but it contains more detail than we were able get from Monday’s stuff… Thanks for the heads-up from commenter ‘Colin’ on the original thread… Still not yet a story, but it is certainly building into an interesting set of questions… Update below the fold:

According to lawyers, the two Irishmen are clients of Bilbank, as they have for some time been receiving their mail at the address of the bank’s branch in town. There are reports of letters arriving there, demanding that the two men disclose the origin of money, coming in as transfers from abroad.

‘Bulbank strictly abides the legal provisions for check-ups in such cases. And if there are any hints of possible breaches, the bank immediately informs the authorities in charge’, the press office of the bank commented.

Annonymous commenter ‘k’ points us at this piece, which offers a possible explanation:

Steven and Eiden have registered the firms “A M” and “B D” on January 24 in Bulgaria at the same address, 8 Mara Gidik Street. In addition to the same family name and the same address registration, the two provided the same address in Ireland – a farm in the village of Ballybinaby, Hackballs Cross in the County Louth.

This is the same place where Slab Murphy lives.

Many Irish citizens have come to Bulgaria and registered their own firms in order to purchase real estate, since the country joined the European Union in January. [emphasis added]

  3. Think his name is ‘Colon’, and it sure fits, given all the info we have received up to now.

If ‘Colon’ is unable to come up with anything more, can we all give him a good flush whatever your moderators conclude?

While innocence until proven guilt applies (morally if not actually legally in matters of criminal assets) I’m afraid that there is a story here, either way, and Slugger is leading the local media on it.
Sour shooting of the messenger just makes those doing it look desperate and paranoid.

Yes because as we all know the last named Murphy is entirely rare and only held by close relatives of slab

I sometimes wonder if some of our commenters actually read the stuff we blog: “Still not yet a story, but it is certainly building into an interesting set of questions…”

    Sean,

No one has claimed this is ‘a story’ – least of all me. It is a jumble of facts that give rise to questions. The answer might be that they are just a couple of Irish businessmen, looking to disburse spare capital in the Bulgarian market. But I’m happy enough to wait and see, rather than knee jerk one way, or indeed the other.

Under his real name ‘k’ sends me another link, which I will incorporate in the main story above.

Yes Mick but because you chose this “non-story” you are inferring its true and that there is something untowards about it. You are being disengenuous by claiming its not a story but interesting. You are stirring the pot and pointing the finger of criminality at people with out the slightest pretense of evidence and then claiming innnocence by saying its a non story.

What the government would call a disinformation campaign, not facts not passed on in a non story, nudge nudge wink wink

Actually, Sean, you would be the one inferring, Mick would be the one passing along the facts from K which might *IMPLY* something, but the facts, by themselves, do not infer anything.

Are you suggesting that it is beyond the realm of probability, let alone rational possibility, that, assuming arguendo, that these are Slab’s nephews, he would not or could not use the two wee lads to launder his filthy lucre?

Took the words right out of my mouth DC.

Sean, you are talking this up into something it may not be. Indeed you seem to be joining up dots that are simply not there.

Again, give me one good reason why this information (already in the public domain in Sofia) should be ‘spiked’?

    Mick

PS: sorry about the ‘admin’ signature. I had to go in and sort out a particularly foulmouthed troll, and forgot to sign in as me again…

  15. Sean says:

And Dread I stand by the word infer

By merely publishing this story thats entirely factless and by assuming “certain Facts” you are infering that Slab Murphy and his nephews, none of whom have actually been identified though named in the previous statement, are commiting a criminal act in a foreign country even though not a single fact has been provided except that 2 men who apparently have the last name Murphy are in Bulgaria

    And one last thing

even though this is starting to look like an obsesion it isnt

But exactly what Crimes has Slab been convicted of and how much of his wealth has been shown to be from illegal sources

    Wouldn’t bet on that!

I think most people are filing this in the ‘one to watch’ category. And Sean, this is a blog and discussion blog. If you couldn’t gossip on it, you wouldn’t have spent so long here!
