Timing, eh?
Something for the Green Party to think about as they sign up to government with Fianna Fáil and the PDs.
The European Court of Justice has ruled that Ireland is in breach of EU regulations protecting water quality and has failed to implement pollution-reduction measures in designated shellfish sites around the country. In a ruling published today, the court found that Ireland has failed to fulfil its obligations under the 1979 European Shellfish Directive, under which EU states are required to introduce laws protecting areas where shellfish grow.
Adds As the RTÉ report points out
This is the third environmental case Ireland has lost before the European court this year.

the celtic tiger is such a shellfish nation
Don’t be so crabby Timyflips!!
Stop snapping at each other, you pair of prawns, and exercise your intellectual mussels. Perhaps the Greens could spin this one to claim a few scal(lo)ps.
Guys – the subtitle of this site is notes on *Northern Ireland* politics and culture.
Fair enough the odd article on whats happening in the south is fine but lately the site is swamped with it – and with no mention of the politics of the government that actually *governs* “here” – i.e. Westminster.
No mention of the ID cards debacle – Lady Thatchers swipe at Tony, the *very* interesting story of the surgeon who publicly stated that the NHS wasnt interested in reducing waiting lists. You know – things that actually *affect* how things happen “here” rather than are intersting for interest sake.
Way too much sovereignty over Irish internal affairs has been passed to unelected bureaucrats in Europe. It’s an utter undemocratic disgrace that we allow these madarins to impose legal requirements on us and enforce sanctions against us if we fail to comply.
I´d like some more shellfish related puns myself, actually. They are brightening up my day.
I’m not doing fishy puns just for the halibut.
Dubliner, ever single European law have been agreed by the governments, which are elected, more or less democratically. It’s easy to blame the civil servants who apply these laws, and politicians in every country are used to instead of taking their own responsibilities.
Do you also blame the European subsidies the Republic of Ireland were given too ?
Are you saying we should all just clam up Dubliner and crawl back into our shells?
Sorry but I’m going to stick to this one like a limpet.
mmmm knob just wants us to clam up about this issue. Can’t he see he is just a prawns in this game? Personally I think it’s an fissue that runs deep…. I think the ship has sailed on this being a serious thread… Personally I think it’s a load of pollock to be too serious!
What’s that got to do with the price of fish?
Oh stop coding, this isn’t the plaice. We need to get back to the sole of Slugger.
look – you buoys might be having a whale of a time but as soon as i raise a serious point you clam up. So stop codding about !
mnob
You’re absolutely right, this is mackerel, sorry, doggerel. If we could all get over our perch-onal desire to mess around and get into the deep waters of serious discussion we’d all be squids in.
Enough sharking around people…
Are you saying we should all just clam up Dubliner and crawl back into our shells? Sorry but I’m going to stick to this one like a limpet.
What a cracker snakebrain, deserves a verse of Molly Malone.
‘and she wheels here wheel barrow
through streets broad and narrow
Shouting cockles and mussles alive alive oh!.’
You’re just fishing around trying to get a reaction aren’t you curious?
Sure A bit of light relief is better than reading some of the pollocks on other threads don’t you think?
Enough octopussyfooting around, I’m off for a swim
Holy Mackerel! The Irish government is skate-ing on thin ice, just codding about instead of fish-tackling the problem. This issue is not a load of molluscs, as it concerns an industry worth millions of squid. Sorry, I couldnt resist either
Enough of this nonsense. You’re all floundering.
I’m gonna have a bass and watch a movie – a fish called Wanda.
mnob is skateing around the issue by dropping a red herring.
I’ve smelt it.
He’s the sole complainer.
If he doesn’t stop carping, ee’l likely get a pike up a certain plaice.
You’re whiting over the issue here joe, salmon ought to do something about it. The Irish Gov have been shrimping on the funding for too long, or whelking on their responsibility if you prefer. We’ve got to keep winkling away at them until we get a result.
Maybe we should follow our continental neighbours and take the Hollandaise model.
It haddock to be you, snakebrain.
An eel wind is a-gonna blow, and if we don’t repent and reform soon there will be no plaice like home.
Lets be serious for a moment susan
What this problem needs is more funding, to the tuna 25 million piranha-m, if you ask me
Cod, that’s good. 25 mill is no small fry, but….oh, help, I got nothin’.
Roe is me? It’s not even Friday, why are we all being so Super-fishal …….
I guess we are shellfish.
This thread has gone to the dog(fish)
Though some people seem to be having a whale of a time.
Whelkome to slugger! The home of the highest concentrate of piscine puns since Billy the Fish in Viz Comic!!
Fins have cod really bad in this plaice on a grand scale(s) ! I sea slug(ger) has plumbed the depths and maybe its time to batter down the hatches turbo(o)t!
Eel head off now before I outstay my welcome as I know when to SarGassO!
To be honest though amongst all the serious stuff this thread has been a little RAY of Punshine!!
Pete
I think I owe you an apology for hijacking your thread and turning it into a string of fishy comments. There is a serious issue here, and I think, as someone said, “the ship’s already sailed” on the possibility of it getting the discussion it deserved now.
But it was fun while it lasted.
I promise I’ll be good from now on…
These fish jokes are terrible. You should all get Trout of Here
