Caught Red-handed … Except

Wed 28 March 2007, 3:07pm

Not caught, by the PSNI that is. A savage attack caught on CCTV, but still no justice. So what exactly do the police do, again? Is it that hard to find someone in Newtonabbey?

I think, (and hope), someone saw him on the news last night and will be handing the info over to the Police. Little scumbag.

Regrettably the whole debate about acceptance or non-acceptance of the PSNI masked the important issue of the PSNI not being particularly good at its job.

However, there will always be unsolved crime even crime caught on CCTV.

Whilst it may not necessarily be the case in this episode, the lack of prosecutions in the past (never mind convictions), despite seemingly overwhelming evidence, has often been the result of the RUC/PSNI obsession with intelligence-gathering at the expense of crime prevention and detection. It begs the question that if the police cannot or will not prosecute criminals (for operational reasons) who almost beat an innocent businessman to death, what (or whose) purpose are the PSNI serving, exactly?

Perhaps it is the quality of the recruits – the fact that dare not speak its name?? But it will always take time to reverse the old ‘justice by power tools’ regime :)

Sounds like this vicious attack came within a hair’s breadth of being first degree murder. I trust that the PSNI are giving it a high priority.
I hope that Mr. Fung makes a good recovery.

State it plain. Are you implying that 50-50 recruiting is to blame for the imcompetence and complacency this particular episode demonstrates? If so get real.

Very very doubtful if 50-50 has f-all to do with this one as whoever is in charge of this investigation at Detective level or above would have been in the,uh, organisation long before the advent of 50-50 recruiting.

So actually, the current situation is the enduring and ongoing legacy of a lethargic, indifferent and incompetent RUC.

Perversly Bog_X you are right. It is to do with the quality of recruits; those recruited ten years ago or more.

It is when the area North-East of Belfast is called Newtownabbey…

‘The attack by two masked men was over in less than a minute’ .. BBC link

How ironic. Then there’s the small matter of police officers not being permitted to do their job – for the sake of the process.

Hey, Concerned Loyalist, I see your pals are putting up posters in the Whiteabbey train station. For anyone who hasn’t seen them, they basically say “we do not support drug dealing and the PSNI should catch the dealers” .. the poster is adorned with pictures of flute bands dedicated to John Gregg.

Do you guys really think that convinces anyone ?

With reference to my post of 12:04am above, it now transpires that one of the people pictured on the UDA posters, Tommy Kirkham, has now been kicked out of that organization. I am sure that Slugger will cover this matter later.

Concerned Loyalist, which side are you on ? I’m hoping that you get yourself shot in the middle of yet another feud.
