Orde: threat to Sinn Fein is real…

Thu 16 November 2006, 3:33pm

Hugh Orde doesn’t explicitly confirm the increased level of threat Sinn Fein claims its leadership is under, but merely comments, “I don’t think they are wrong”. He notes there are some who simply cannot countenance deciding Northern Ireland’s future under the consent principle:

“Because of where the leadership wants to take their organisation, which is down a political and an entirely proper route towards a debate on the future of the island of Ireland, there are people who don’t want that to happen. They’d far rather do what they’ve done in the past, which is violence.”

    Hi all,

When I read this I thought that the leadership of Sinn Fein are trying to illicit sympathy and get people to say…pooor Gerry and company. What Gerry Adams and others in the movement have to realize…along with the british government…democracy is –people get to disagree with their leaders.
Will sinn fein and the british government acknowledge the principle of consent if the majority of republicans opt not to follow sinn fein with their probritish proposals.
Anyway, I think that the leadership is desperate to have people think favorable of them even if it is to get a little sympathy.
Personally if Gerry Adams keeps on the path he is currently following he is poltically on the down turn and the disendents should let him poltically destroy himself and leave him alone. The worse nightmare for Gerry adams is to be old and not a part of the politcal landscape…
He is no Michale Collins….and should not be made into a martyr.
