“I think it suggests he’s not talking about a couple of weeks”

Thu 28 September 2006, 3:30am

As the New Statesman noted as far back as November 2004, it has long been suggested that Education Secretary, Alan Johnson, was being groomed as the preferred Anybody But Gordon candidate, something our own Secretary of State [and declared candidate for Deputy Leader- Ed] is said to have noticed.. so it’s interesting to see the same Alan Johnson suggesting that Tony Blair might, after all, stick around as PM for longer than some may have wanted.. as David Milliband, on Newsnight, did as well.. going through the months to June, though not beyond, as suggested end dates for the Blair leadership.

Will he be able to stay on long enough to beat Maggie’s record stay in office ? Anybody know when that milestone would be reached ?

That would be sometime in May, GF.. presumably as late as possible.

Not an unrealistic forecast, GF.. at least from a Blairite point of view – the Brown camp, and other interested parties, may have other ideas though..

Maggie was elected sometime in 1979, May I think.
She was ousted from office in November 1990.

That makes it around 11 years, so Tony Blair cannot achieve the goal of being Prime Minister longer than Maggie.
Correct me if I am wrong.

Still think Lord Levy, if charged will be Blair’s Nemesis.

Correct TurboP, 4th May 1979 to the 22nd November 1990 for Maggie.

I was mistaken in thinking he’d outlast Thatcher as PM… but the 10-year goal does appear to be his target.
