It seems our fearless leader is going to announce he wants to fry bigger fish later today at the TUC conference in Brighton. La Haine is expected to lay out his plans and intentions for becoming Deputy Leader of the Labour Party. He faces a few problems, one of them of course being the absence of a vacancy. Not only are Labour not waiting for Blair’s body to grow cold, they haven’t waited for the burial. In any case, I suspect Mr Hain will enter the records as the least loved and least missed of all our recent blow-ins.
Now he’s got us all yawning.
I thing I’ll have to send him Dale Carnegie’s book as a going away present.
He will have to some way to oust Spellar as least loved, least missed.
isn’t is sad miss fitz that you can pontificate about hain being lesat loved etc. how could you ever love the incumbent of what is essentially a colonial position??
within the limits of the structure (ie that of colonial overlord) hain has done and said things that no presvious sec of state has said: i.e. he has begun to enunciate a few basic realities…

“Not only are Labour not waiting for Blair’s burial, they haven’t even waited for his body to grow cold…”

Surely Peter Mandelson has to be the least loved and missed of our recent secretaries of state as well as the most odious, self serving etc. etc
At least if Hain stops MLAs salaries he will have achieved something worthwhile.

Not really. Unionists liked Mandy, but detested Mo. Vice versa for nationalists.
I’m sure Unionists won’t miss Hain in the same way that Nationalists didn’t miss Mandy.
However, it is purely a cosmetic exercise. The Secretary of State for NI does NOT determine NI policy – that’s the Labour Party NEC and cabinet.
Assuming that Hain moves on during the next 12 months, his replacement (who may well be more acceptable to Unionists on a personal basis) will simply continue to enact the British Govt policy on NI.
I can’t see any indication that the govt intend to change that in any way.

NI policy is No. 10 and Stormont Castle. Just ask Jonathan Powell how much input the comrades have. As for the cabinet…

Possibly, but it still doesn’t disprove my point.
There are quite a few posts from Unionists on Slugger and ATW who believe that a cabinet reshuffle moving Hain and/or Brown becoming leader
will lead to a major change in NI policy.
Brown would probably put less emphasis on NI than Blair but that’s the only change that I can see.
Brown isn’t going to waltz in and undo all the work of the past 8 years and hand veto powers to the DUP.
Anyway, Blair certainly won’t go prior to the end of this year. Therefore, if there is no local assembly by Nov 24th (which seems likely), the joint stewardship arrangements will come into place and the move to the super councils will go ahead next year.
