1086 and all that.. indeed

Fri 4 August 2006, 11:42pm

Another post in an occasional series on dusty, or boggy, old tomes.. this time that tome is scribe A’s masterwork The Domesday Book, both Great and Little versions, which, as described in this Independent article, spotted via the Guardian NewsBlog, went online today.. and you can search and download images.. have fun! In related [sort of - Ed] news, the 1986 BBC attempt to emulate the Domesday catalogue, once thought lost forever, is also online here, not as neatly though.. but, unlike the original Domesday survey of 11th Century England, it does include information about Northern Ireland.. from 1986 natch.

I went to the 1986 catalogue home page, I clicked on the little symbol (a map of the UK) and a new page opened. This page remained blank at all times, is it an exceptionally slow download or am I missing something?

I had the same experience. Perhaps they are trying to perfectly re-create those old BBC Micro load times?

It does seem to be slightly temperamental… but it was working on Thursday. So all I can advise is to try again later.
