Bush: Sunday, Bloody Sunday

Thu 15 June 2006, 11:58pm

Funky, inspiring footage from the US Congress as you have never seen it before (unless you’ve seen this footage of course), and from the much maligned current President GW Bush… Enjoy it. And many thanks Niall!!!

    Brilliant!

I guess when Bono and GW got together to discuss aid for Africa they cut loose and jammed for a bit.

I like this one where Bono goes nuts over some American guy waving a San Francisco/Sinn Féin flag at a concert.

    Bono goes nuts over SF*

The Bush thing has given the two of us here a good laugh before bed. Must have taken hours.

M — think you are a bit off the mark with your post about Bono going nuts. Looks staged to me ( what he is saying is perfectly reasonable) , he ‘s very calm and controlled and it’s part of the show. Would I be right in thinking that he is refering to the Enniskillen bomb? It all looks late 80′s to me.

    M,

Hmmm … that clip seems a bit scripted to me. More like a publicity stunt than a true spur of the moment glimpse of life captured on film.

Watch it again … carefully. I don’t care how musically gifted someone is — when surprised by something that truly offends you, you rarely have the grace or calm to immediately give a retort and keep count/beat at the same time. Add to that how young Bono was back then (when was it shot — 1984, 85?) and i just don’t believe he yet had the poise to pull that off.

    Rapunsel,

    Yeah, i think you’re right … must’ve been Enniskillen.

Bono’s cheesy pants threw me off — think i had the same pair in ’84.

  15. Miss Fitz (profile) says:

I find that believable. At that time, they were on a tour of USA and he was doing a lot of TV and radio interviews. I was still in my unreconstructed republican phase and can recall being ashamed of what he was saying, and there was a lot of feeling against him at that time.

That video looks about right for the tone and the time

  16. Garibaldy says:

I couldn’t be bothered downloading the Bono speech, but is it the one where he talks about the glory of dying for the Revolution, well fuck the Revolution.

If so, it’s from the Rattle and Hum tour, and is on the documentary of the tour.

  17. Miss Fitz (profile) says:

No Garibaldy. I vaguely remember having seen this before, years ago. He spots someone waving a flag with (?) SF and U2 on it and goes off on one. SF killed 11 people and injured 50 others, or something along those lines.

  18. Yours, etc says:

The video was shot in San Francisco. Pre 1989 because the video shows the Embarcardero Freeway in the background. That was torn down after the ’89 earthquake. The concert was downton on the waterfront across the street from the Ferry Building at the Vallaincourt Fountain.

  22. Rory says:

Tip O.Neill looked decidedly underwhelmed. Maybe he’s not a U2 fan.

Still it’s very dangerous stuff – next thing you know Bush will be thinking he’s as important as Bono. And that would never do.
