A confrontation about a confrontation

Mon 22 May 2006, 6:08pm

While we watch, or listen, to the non-election of an Executive, thought I’d just point to this minor confrontation, between Sinn Féin and the PSNI. Yesterday the BBC briefly noted the report of a confrontation at a hunger strike commemoration march in the Camlough area, near Newry, while the police were diverting traffic. Today the SF MP Conor Murphy has issued a statement denying that any confrontation took place – “There were no stones thrown at the PSNI. There was no need for the PSNI to be anywhere near the march, yet they have engineered a story which is grounded in fiction and has no basis in fact.” And around we go again.. [Was there a complaint to the Police Ombudsman's office? -Ed]

    Camlough area of Newry

What bullshit is this. Camlough is a village completely seperate from Newry, even if the post office insists on adding “Newry, Co. Down” to Camlough addresses.

Sheesh.. that’s what you pick out to comment on?

I’ll amend it to “near Newry”.

The story is a load of balls. A couple of young fellas who weren’t even in the parade were accosted by PSNI officer and there was a tiny bit of argy-bargy. It wasn’t 1/10th of what you’d get outside the Bot any week night. Anyone who was there yesterday can testify to that.

A more interesting story buried in the Irish News within this one is about the resignation of SF Newry and Mourne councillor Brendan Lewis. Any thoughts on this? It is very strange timing, given that he had an interview with Daily Ireland last week and it was never mentioned.

Perhaps a thread on the shooting of two men in Rathcoole over the weekend might have been more deserving of a thread.

Probably rival drug dealers trying to muscle in on their patch.

  6. Camlough area of Newry

What’s wrong with describing camlough as near Newry! If I was explaining its location to someone unfamilar with the area that’s what I would do!!

The PSNI managed traffic on the roads to facilitate the march yet Sinn Fein still give them flak for being there. They are just as bad as the Orange Marchers who force the rest of us to make to stop what we are doing so they can dwell on the past in public.

If they want to remember the lives of the hunger strikers, go to mass and say a few prayers for them and their loved ones. The sinn fein bigwigs just use their deaths as a publicity stunt and aren’t interested in the grief of the families.

Are some deaths more important than others?? I don’t see Gerry Adams holding marches and making speeches about lives lost at the hands of the IRA

I noticed the Sinn Fein workers putting up black flags and posters all along the route, even clambering into peoples gardens uninvited to attach them to posts. I spoke to one owner who said he was standing in the garden at the time and said they carried on regardless.
