A fair deal for RIR soldiers – no pun intended ;)

Thu 9 March 2006, 6:33pm

The DUP have successfully negotiated a good severance package for RIR soldiers faced with redundancy.

The RIR announcement last Autumn had the potential to become the DUP’s political equivalent of the UUP and the Patten Report but the DUP seem to have avoided significant political damage though isolated border communities in particular will still have security concerns.

Is this successful negotiation an omen of things come? Proposals for some form of devolution seem delayed rather than stopped and David Hanson’s plans are still awaited.

Yet the DUP cannot afford to rest on its laurels. It identified a series of measures that would create an “enabling environment”, as these measures are achieved it needs to transform this good news into positive attitudes to renewed devolution.

jill why should unionists be forced to share power with nationialists? because the ira will kill us if we dont?

iF nationalists wanted power they shouldve changed their policies to increase their voter base

Where will the RIR be tomorrow? enjoying their legally gained windfall unlike the provos who will stillbe squirming around wanting their stormont seats

as for joint authority , wise up, Unionist ie the majority of people here (you remember democracy dont you) wouldnt allow it

lets forget about an inclusive government and go for normal democratic elections

Hmm, I hate to be the one to tell you, but you are not a normal society. That’s why the GFA was needed and why you can’t have “normal” democratic elections. There are no democrats in Ulster, now that the Women’s Coalition no longer exists.

    Jill,
what you mean by “not normal democratic society” is that nationalists are in the minority and cant handle that fact

maybe if they give up their fantasy of a UI, which some of them murdered for over the last 35 years, then maybe they might get somewhere, until then they just have to realise theyre the minority and will remain so for a very LONG time to come

These remarks say it all. They show me how vary far the boys in Ulster have to go on the road to normalcy.

    1. Democracy is more than majority rule.

    2. Women are actually in the majority in Ulster.

    3. The IRA terrorism of the last 35 years was a direct result of the abuse of majority rule.

    4. It’s a scary thought that some of you boys have learned NOTHING from those 35 years. Seems to me that you want to do it all over again.

I remember being at a political meeting where a Woman’s Coalition spokeswoman was saying that they “deserved” seats in the new asssembly even if people didn’t vote for them. I was struck by the commitment to democracy.

    jill your first two comments:
“1. Democracy is more than majority rule.

    2. Women are actually in the majority in Ulster. ”

    actually contradict each other!!

i thought the provos were fighting for a united ireland? so the civil rights mraches were provo marches according to you

Also Unionists werent in power for the majority of the last 35 years, so no majority rule to blame for your provo campagin to exterminate protestants

  12. Jill Robinson says:

You’re either disingenuous or obtuse. Assuming it’s the second, I’ll continue in grade school language.

    1. Democracy is government by the people. Generally, it means that a majority rules. But this does not mean “mob-ocracy”. A mob might be in the majority but not be democrats. For there are checks and balances in a democracy. These include respect for the rights of others, especially minorities. A glance at so-called Islamic democracies will show you what happens when this principle is thrown out.

    2. Women are the greatest majority in the world. According to your notions of democracy, this means that they should be in power in every democratic country.

    Moving on…

    “jill your first two comments:
“1. Democracy is more than majority rule.

    2. Women are actually in the majority in Ulster. ”

    actually contradict each other!!”

    They do? Explain.

“i thought the provos were fighting for a united ireland? so the civil rights mraches were provo marches according to you”

I posted nothing of the sort. Either you’re confusing me with another poster or reading into my posts what isn’t there.

“Also Unionists werent in power for the majority of the last 35 years,”

I was referring to the decades before the 1970s, when Unionists were in power and abused that power disgracefully. They went too far (bully boys always do, when they think they can get away with it) and the victims reacted.

    ” so no
majority rule to blame for your provo campagin to exterminate protestants”

This thread is about the UDR/RIR. You started posting about the IRA, not me. The provos are as much “my” provos as the Sunnis of Iraq are “your” Sunnis. (I’m assuming by your typical Ulsterman language and viewpoints that you are not an Iraqi Sunni.)

    Youre the one defending the iras murderous campaign;
“The IRA terrorism of the last 35 years was a direct result of the abuse of majority rule.”

but for the majority of the iras terrorist campaign there was no local government here let alone a unoinist one, also i thought the provos wanted a united ireland, according to your commenting there terrorism was about getting civil rights – make your mind up love
