March called off after violent clashes with Gardai

Sat 25 February 2006, 7:35pm

As both the BBC and RTÉ report, the march in Dublin, organised by Willie Frazer and FAIR, has been called off after a counter-demonstration by Republican Sinn Féin descended into violent confrontation with Gardai officers, the BBC report that journalists were also attacked. Irish blogs cover it too, with some photos at the Dossing Times – lifting an image from the Dublin traffic cameras site – and Back Seat Driver Dick O’Brien provides an eye-witness account

    No it wasn’t.

“Shouldn’t have turned on the Gardai though, should have waited on the b*****ds marchin and got into them!”

Yes, good idea…fight sectarian bigotry with sectarian bigotry, and before you know it, a “United” Ireland becomes a fantasy.

I have a lot of sympathy with the good people of Dublin tonite, and i hope the gardai and the injured journalist will be ok.
I believe the ordinary people of dublin would have turned a blind eye to this parade and would have let them have their parade in peace.

There are still many unionist posters, who often argue their point very well, then there were ones that didn’t and now don’t at all. ATW is a much more comfortable place for them to be.

It most certainly is. I would urde all unionists to lobby their elected representatives to ask for this to be brough about.

The notion of the ROI tricolor is a pathetic joke.

Irish nationalism/republicanism cannot handle a Unionist/Loyalist/British (even tho they are also Irish)/ Protestant about the place.

All cultures welcome, except that of fellow Irishmen who happen not to subscribe to the myopic view of traditional “Irishness”.

That is so much rubbish. Catholics and Protestants live in peace down here, notwithstanding the disgraceful actions of a tiny minority in Dublin. We haven’t spent 30 years killing each other.

    Brian Boru,

“Catholics and Protestants live in peace down here, notwithstanding the disgraceful actions of a tiny minority in Dublin. We haven’t spent 30 years killing each other.”

You are obsessed with this bogus Protestant/Catholic thing.

The conflict is about nationality and identity…not two slightly different strands of the same religion.

The ROI harbours a deep hatred of unionism and unionists.

“We haven’t spent 30 years killing each other”

How very revealing. Nationalism/Republicanism is never done telling us that the problem is Ireland’s problem.

Now, when the truth reveals itself, the “we” becomes a different matter.

PS: Most Catholics & Protestants live very happily together in Northern Ireland. I certainly hope that my next door neighbours (of a different religious denomination to my family, in the adjoining semi) are not intent on killing us. They have never hinted at it when we socialise together.

  20. Brian Boru says:

“The ROI harbours a deep hatred of unionism and unionists.”

Rubbish. We take a different view from Unionism on the constitutional question, but hatred is the preserve of a tiny group of people. But then Unionism can’t resist tarring Catholics with one brush, as seen in the 50 years of one-party rule in Belfast when Brookeborough was telling Unionists “not to employ Roman Catholics 95% of whom are disloyal”, and when the highest position the minority community got was as Attorney-General and only once. We have had Protestant Finance Ministers, Agriculture Ministers, Presidents etc. I think our record on treatment of non-Catholics has been exemplary.

“PS: Most Catholics & Protestants live very happily together in Northern Ireland. I certainly hope that my next door neighbours (of a different religious denomination to my family, in the adjoining semi) are not intent on killing us. They have never hinted at it when we socialise together. ”

Then why are you so keen to overgeneralise with respect to Southern attitudes? May I add that mob violence is still vastly more common in the Six Counties than in the South. Dublin was the exception that proves the rule.

    Brian Boru,

With respect, you obviously missed the bit where I said:

“The conflict is about nationality and identity…not two slightly different strands of the same religion”

Let me put it simply for you…in common with most of my unionist friends, I don’t give a flying one what religion, if any, a person is.

You are obsessed with this Protestant/Catholic thing.

    Brian Boru,

    Good.

I’ll rephrase my original assertion for you then.

Irish nationalism/republicanism cannot handle a Unionist/Loyalist/British Northern Irish person about the place.

Now, would you care to deal with that?

PS: Not that I really care, but does your State not harbour a special place for the Roman Catholic Church in it’s Constitution?

As a foreigner living here for more than 1 1/2 years I can’t understand one thing:
    - I knew about the march last Saturday. For over a week. I had the feeling it was totaly absurd to have this march go on.
    - I was warned by my collegue by e-mail last Thursday. He heared from a taxi-driver there will be a lot of trouble in the city centre and he was warned not to go there this Saturday.

How can the Gardaí and the politicians have missed this so badly?
There had to be a lot more signals to pick this up as a riot much earlier.

I don’t know if it was mostly Northern people that came rioting here. From what I’ve read in the paper, there where a lot of 14 year olds.
If this is an example of the new generation, there is never going to be one goverment on this island for the next 70 years.
